Reds continue to roll, win 10th straight

DENVER (AP) - Mat Latos felt the weight of the Cincinnati Reds' winning streak when he took the mound.
After getting roughed up by the first two batters he faced on Sunday, the big right-hander settled down and kept Cincinnati rolling.
Latos pitched eight strong innings, and Drew Stubbs homered to lift Cincinnati over the Colorado Rockies 7-2 and give the Reds their 10th straight win - their longest streak in 14 years.
The Reds also won 10 straight in 1998, and now they are two wins away from tying the franchise mark that has been done twice - most recently in 1957.
Cincinnati opened a three-game lead over Pittsburgh in NL Central, its biggest edge since mid-June.
"They're not going to go away, that's fairly obviously at this point," outfielder Jay Bruce said of the Pirates. "We have some series left with them, but anytime you can gain a game it's great."
Bruce also homered and Stubbs drove in three runs. Ryan Hanigan and Zack Cozart had two hits each for the Reds, who have won 17 of 19.
The Reds have swept four of five series since the All-Star break and they are a season-best 21 games above .500 (61-40). They have won nine straight road games, including all six on this just-completed trip.
"I'm always talking a perfect road trip and we finally had one," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
Latos (9-3) didn't want to be the one to stop the Reds' momentum, and he rose to the challenge. He allowed four hits and struck out eight.
"A lot of pressure coming into the game knowing we won nine in a row, but I just attacked them," Latos said. "Today it was in the back of my mind, but it's baseball. Just play."
Things didn't start well. Latos walked Dexter Fowler on five pitches, and Josh Rutledge homered on the first pitch he saw from Latos to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead.
"It was a fastball away. It looked like I beat him but he got it up in the air and into a bad part of the ballpark where it flies out," Latos said.
It was the only bright spot for Colorado, which has lost three straight and nine of 11.
"Josh jumped on that first pitch fastball in the bottom of the first inning after Dexter drew a walk, and then that was it," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said.
The Reds took a 3-2 lead into the fifth, then broke it open against Jonathan Sanchez (0-2). Cozart led off with a single, and Stubbs hit his 12th home run.
One out later, Bruce hit his 20th homer into the second deck in right to make it 6-2 and chase Sanchez.
Sanchez, acquired from Kansas City for Jeremy Guthrie on July 20, didn't fare much better than the pitcher he replaced. In his home debut, Sanchez allowed six runs and eight hits, struck out three and walked two. He has failed to pitch at least five innings in either of his starts for Colorado.
"I got hit a lot," he said. "I was throwing strikes and they were swinging the bats."
Miguel Cairo added an RBI single in the eighth off Mike Ekstrom to make it 7-2.
Cincinnati took the lead with carbon-copy plays in consecutive innings. In the second, Chris Heisey led off with a triple and scored on Cairo's sacrifice fly. Cozart followed with a leadoff triple in the third and came home on Stubbs' sacrifice fly to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.
"The bats have picked up the past couple of days," Bruce said. "We've been doing what we need to do. Whether it's the long ball, base hits, sac flies, we've been playing really good baseball."
The Reds struck first when Brandon Phillips' single scored Stubbs from second base in the first. The Rockies answered in the bottom half when Rutledge homered.
"Latos threw the ball great," Baker said. "Other than that first-inning, two-run homer he was lights out. We got some timely hits out of guys."
Phillips left the game in the fifth inning with cramping in his left calf but said he should be fine.
"I'm all right. The knot is still there but I'll be OK," he said. "People were saying it was the altitude, the dry heat, I didn't drink enough water or something. I'm ready to play (Monday). I think I'm going to play."

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he meets with them Sunday ? and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.
Romney touched down in Tel Aviv Saturday night as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.
The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.
Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.
Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments ? and because he's not Obama.
"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."
In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.
Romney told the Israeli daily Haaretz before his arrival that Washington's commitments to Israel should be "as clear as humanly possible" given the changes in the region.
"When Israel feels less secure in the neighborhood, it should feel more secure of the commitment of the United States to its defense."
With polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.
Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials. Romney attended swimming events in London on Saturday morning ahead of his planned flight to Tel Aviv.
In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.
He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. The Romney campaign said the likely GOP nominee only had time in his schedule to meet with one Palestinian leader and that Fayyad has an existing relationship with Romney. The Abbas camp did not offer an explanation for why no meeting was planned.
Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.
Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.
"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."
Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.
Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.
At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."
"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."
Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.
Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.
Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.
The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.
Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.
"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.
Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."
Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

US says human rights deteriorating in China
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The United States says the human rights situation in China is deteriorating and it is time for its authoritarian government to allow dissent.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner was speaking after an annual U.S.-China human rights dialogue that ended in Washington on Tuesday.
The closed-door dialogue is a chance to broach Beijing's treatment of democracy activists and religious and ethnic minorities, a perennial sore point in relations with Washington.
Posner said there is growing frustration among many Chinese people that they don't have the ability to express their differences with the government.
He told reporters Wednesday: "Our message to the Chinese government is you've made progress on the economic front, this is the moment to open up the space to allow people to dissent."

Naps work wonders for restoring your body during stressful times. The issues you are dealing with will wait 5 minutes, trust me. And your overall health is vital.
Remembering to take 5 for your health. Even though you may not be able to eliminate the stress, you can learn to deal with it because it too will pass.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright's first two RBIs of the season helped knock out Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the sixth inning in a game that began in 103-degree heat as the St. Louis Cardinals ended Los Angeles' five-game winning streak with an 8-2 victory on Tuesday night.
Wainwright (8-10) allowed two runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings.
He was a career .223 hitter entering the year with five homers and 23 RBIs but was batting .079 (3-for-38) with three singles and 17 strikeouts this season.
Wainwright doubled to left-center with two outs in the fifth for St. Louis' first run, then scored the tying run on Rafael Furcal's single. After Daniel Descalso was intentionally walked to load the bases in the sixth, Wainwright walked on five pitches to give the Cardinals a two-run lead in a six-run sixth that put them up 8-2.
The Cardinals have won four of five and ended the Dodgers' eight-game winning streak, which had tied the franchise's best since moving to Los Angeles.
Kershaw (7-6) gave up eight runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings, the second-most runs ever allowed by the 2011 NL Cy Young winner. Kershaw, who entered with a 2.74 ERA that ranked among the NL leaders, gave up a career-worst nine runs in 4 2-3 innings on April 26, 2009 at Colorado.
Kershaw sailed through the first four innings in 51 pitches, then needed 53 against 14 batters to get his last five outs.
Kershaw allowed two runs in 14 innings the two starts before Tuesday and threw a shutout against the Cardinals in Los Angeles in May. The Dodgers gave him a vote of confidence after Wainwright's walk, leaving him in, but Kershaw lasted just one more hitter before departing after Furcal's two-run infield hit.
Wainwright (8-10) allowed two runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings, in addition to providing two of the biggest at-bats.
Descalso scored from second on Furcal's infield hit, fielded up the middle by shortstop Luis Cruz, and Allen Craig added a two-run double off Josh Lindblom.
Lance Berkman was taken out for a pinch-runner not long after getting hit by a pitch on the right knee in the third inning by a breaking ball. Berkman went to first base after visiting with a trainer, but jogged to second on a single by Descalso and was removed after a chat with third base coach Jose Oquendo.
Berkman batted seventh for the first time since 2010 and for just the 18th time in his career, bumped down in the order because David Freese entered 10-for-18 during a six-game streak combined with the fact he's just 4-for-22 with 22 RBIs since coming off the 15-day disabled list to start the second half without a rehab stint following right knee surgery in late May.
The Dodgers had scored only two runs in 28 2-3 innings against Wainwright in St. Louis before getting two in the fourth. Four straight batters reached safely with one out, and Juan Rivera and Cruz had an RBI apiece.
Wainwright is 3-1 with a 1.09 ERA at home against the Dodgers.
NOTES: A crew of three umpires began the game with Eric Cooper out sick and a replacement en route. There were no issues before John Tumpane arrived in time for the bottom of the third. ... Kyle Lohse (10-2, 2.71) is fifth in the NL in ERA entering Wednesday night's matchup against Aaron Harang (7-5, 3.46), who has lost his last four decisions against St. Louis. ... Wainwright threw first-pitch strikes to 23 of 30 hitters.

Syrian rebels say fight for Aleppo has begun
BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels have launched an offensive to "liberate" the country's largest city of Aleppo, an opposition commander said Sunday, while in Damascus government troops backed by helicopter gunships wrested back control of rebel-held neighborhoods.
The opposition attack on Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub and traditionally a bedrock of support for President Bashar Assad, was a sign of the rebels' growing confidence and capabilities even as regime forces appeared close to regaining control of the capital Damascus after days of bloody street battles.
With Syria's civil war moving from the countryside and smaller cities into the country's two main urban centers, an activist group said the death toll had risen to more than 19,000 since the uprising began in March 2011. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said July is shaping up to be the deadliest month of the conflict so far, with 2,752 people killed in the first three weeks.
The bloodshed has escalated as the rebels have taken the fight to the government with a week of fighting in Damascus, including a bombing that struck at Assad's inner circle, killing four senior regime officials. In a bid to seize the momentum, the opposition also has taken control of several border crossings with Iraq and Turkey.
Most recently, a video posted online by activists Sunday showed about a dozen gunmen standing in front of the Bab al-Salamah crossing on the Turkish frontier as they raised the Syrian opposition flag.
Yet, in an indication of the see-saw nature of the conflict, even as the rebels seized one crossing, they abandoned another on the Iraqi border.
Iraqi military officials and state television reported that Syrian government forces retook control of the remote Rabiya crossing between the two countries after rebels pulled out.
Gen. Qassim al-Dulaimi, commander of Iraq's forces around the border region of al-Qaim, also reported the sounds of fighting at the Bukamal crossing, suggesting Assad's troops are trying to retake that one as well.
The fighting in Damascus and Aleppo has shaken the government's once seemingly iron grip on the two cities, which are both home to elites who have benefited from close ties to Assad's regime, as well as merchant classes and minority groups who worry their status will suffer if Assad falls.
Col. Abdul-Jabbar Mohammed Aqidi, the commander of rebel forces in Aleppo province, said "we gave the orders for the march into Aleppo with the aim of liberating it."
"We urge the residents of Aleppo to stay in their homes until the city is liberated," he said in a video posted by activists on YouTube. He added that rebels were fighting inside the city while others were moving in from the outskirts.
Aqidi called on government troops to defect and join the opposition, and said rebels will protect members of President Bashar Assad's Alawite minority sect, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam, saying "our war is not with you but with the Assad family."
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said the fighting is concentrated in several neighborhoods.
Saeed said rebels are in full control of the central Salaheddine district and the nearby Sakhour area. He added that thousands of residents have fled tense quarters of the city for safer neighborhoods and the suburbs.
"Aleppo is witnessing serious street battles" and many shops are closed, Saeed said.
He said there were fierce clashes on the road leading to the city's international airport, known as Nairab, as rebels tried to surround the airfield to prevent the regime from sending reinforcements.
Syrian state TV, however, played down the scale of the violence, saying government troops were hunting down terrorists and killing large numbers of them.
In the capital of Damascus, the Observatory also reported attacks by government forces in the neighborhoods of Mazzeh and Barzeh that had once been held by rebels. It said that troops used helicopters gunships in the attack, causing heavy casualties.
Maj. Gen. Nabil Zughaib, described as a missile expert, was also shot dead along with his wife and a son in the Damascus neighborhood of Bab Touma, according to the Observatory.
Syrian state TV denied government forces were using helicopters in Damascus, and said the capital was calm and troops were just mopping up the remnants of the "terrorists" in cooperation with residents. The government refers to those trying to overthrow Assad's regime as "terrorists."
Television also showed images of calm streets in Damascus and workmen cleaning up rubble in the once-rebel held Midan neighborhood, in effort to portray a capital where everything has returned to normal.
Assad, meanwhile, appeared on state TV receiving Gen. Ali Ayyoub, the new army chief of staff, whose predecessor replaced the defense minister slain in the bombing. It was only Assad's second appearance since the attack.
Despite the regime's efforts to present an image of calm in the capital, Malaysia's government said it was shuttering its embassy in Damascus and evacuating more than 130 students and diplomats, while Italy ordered of its citizens to leave the country because of the "progressive deterioration" of the situation.
The escalating bloodshed and increasing chaos in Syria also has put the country's neighbors on edge, particularly Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel was closely monitoring the violence in Syria for signs the regime's chemical weapons or missiles might make their way into the hands of anti-Israeli militants.
Over the weekend, Israel's defense minister, Ehud Barak, said the Jewish state was preparing for a possible attack to prevent that from happening.
The increasingly precarious situation of the Assad regime is stoking Israeli fears that, should the Syrian government collapse, militants affiliated with Lebanon's Hezbollah or al-Qaida could raid Syrian military arsenals for chemicals weapons or sophisticated missiles that could strike Israeli territory.
For his part, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has announced the start of a "national campaign to collect donations to support our brothers in Syria," suggesting the oil-rich kingdom may be looking to boost its financial support for the rebels, which they are already believed to be funding.

Apple updated the iPod touch hardware in the fall of 2008, and again in the falls of 2009 and 2010. Year after year, the iPod touch hardware kept pace with the iPhone hardware, adding new chipsets, gyroscopes, FaceTime cameras, and Retina displays as the iPhone added them.
Then, in 2011, the iPod touch hardware was not updated. It got a new color -- a white option -- but that was it. No new chipset, no new optics.
The fall of the iPod market
Apple's iPod business had been shrinking for a while now. Apple sold 15.4 million iPods in Q1, 2012, down from 19 million in Q1, 2011. Apple maintains that the iPod touch accounts for roughly 50% of iPod sales, but 50% of 15.4 million is still less than 50% of 19 million.
The iPad, released in 2010, likely played some part in that. Though more expensive, it also offered a bigger screen and, for some things, a better experience. The $0 iPhone 3GS, released in 2011, may have also been a factor. Though it lacked a Retina display, the lower up-front cost might have convinced more people to more quickly make the leap from iPod to iPhone.
Yet, to this day, the iPod touch remains the cheapest overall way to access the App Store, and one of the most popular portable gaming platforms on the market. Starting at just $200, with no cellular contracts -- indeed, not even the option for cellular data -- its perfect for kids, for joggers, for developers, for those who want a phone other than the iPhone but still want access to iOS, and for those who simply want a tiny, app-centric tablet for home, travel, or work.
The iPod touch in an iPad mini world
With an iPad mini not only rumored to be coming, but rumored to be coming at the same $200 base price the iPod touch currently enjoys, where would that leave the iPod touch then in the lineup?
Apple has several options:
- Cancel the iPod touch. This would replace the iPod touch with the iPad mini as the entry-level iOS device, and keep the product matrix cleaner and simpler.
- Keep the 2010 iPod touch on the market. This makes it the pocketable alternative at the same price, or the budget, iPod shuffle option at an even lower price.
- Introduce a new, 2012 iPod touch. This brings it back up to spec with the rumored 4-inch, 16:9 iPhone 5 and increases its value proposition at the same price.
Let's take them in order.
Canceling the iPod touch
As far as iMore has heard, Apple isn't canceling the iPod touch or replacing it with the iPad mini, at least not yet. Unless we heard wrong -- and it doesn't seem like it so far -- there will still be an iPod touch on the shelves when the iPod mini joins it.
Keeping the 2010 iPod touch on the market
If the iPod mini hits store shelves at $200 or $250, it makes it seem harder for Apple to sell a 2-year old iPod touch for $200. Even though miniaturization can be expensive, and ultra-portability can be a feature, for many customers smaller is synonymous with cheaper.
Apple could try to offset this with more cosmetic changes -- add "nanochromatic" color options like the iPod nano and iPod shuffle enjoy -- to increase the perceived value, but even that might leave the iPod touch as a tough sell compared to the bigger iPod mini.
Apple could drop the price to $150, perhaps less. But the current bill of goods for the lowest end iPod touch 4 is probably just under $150. If Apple can't reduced that to less than $100 or so, and you take into account manufacturing, transport, and other associated costs, they won't sell it for under $200. They're not Amazon or Google. They don't sell hardware at or below cost.
If Apple wants an even lower priced iOS device on the market, and they can get production costs down enough, this is an option. It just doesn't seem like a likely one at this point.
(Apple has announced that the current iPod touch will be iOS 6 compatible, like all current generation iOS devices they sell. Take that as you wish.)
Introducing a new iPod touch
There was no new iPod touch hardware in 2011, so Apple could certainly introduce an all-new, radically improved iPod touch in 2012. If it includes the new internals from the iPhone 5, and the rumored new 4-inch, 16:9 screen, then it will be seem as an even bigger hardware revision than it might have otherwise been.
The iPad mini will be perceived as all new hardware, and the best way to give the iPod touch a fighting chance at the same or similar price point, is to give it all new hardware as well.
If Apple wants to keep iOS as a premium brand, at least relative to the greater iPod line, then an all-new iPod touch 5 seems like the best option.
Conclusion
The iPod touch may get updated and stand its ground, dollar-for-dollar with the iPad mini, or it might stay around as a legacy device like the iPod classic, or it might stay get even cheaper and become the iPod shuffle of the iOS line. Potentially, Apple could even introduce a new iPod touch at the same price and keep the older one around at a cheaper price.
iMore hasn't heard what Apple plans to do with the iPod touch line yet, but we did hear a couple months ago that the iPod touch line wasn't going anywhere.
And that's certainly good news for kids, for joggers, for developers, for those who want a phone other than the iPhone but still want access to iOS, and for those who simply want a tiny, app-centric tablet for home, travel, or work.

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Home Secretary says the government was warned last month about Olympic security manpower issues ? far earlier than has previously been admitted.
Olympic security has been in crisis after contractor G4S made the last-minute admission that it hadn't recruited enough people to guard London's sensitive games sites.
The development forced officials to call in the military to fill the gap, embarrassing ministers who had earlier insisted that everything was on track for the games, which begin July 27.
In a letter to an opposition lawmaker, Home Secretary Theresa May wrote that she was told of a "possible temporary shortfall" in staffing numbers by G4S as long ago as June 27.
That's far earlier than the July 11 date that May had previously mentioned to lawmakers.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9310 (Verizon Wireless)
The last thing RIM needs right now, after its middling, behind-the-times BlackBerry Curve 9370 ($99.99, 3 stars), is an even lower-end version, but that's exactly what we have here with the BlackBerry Curve 9310 ($49.99 direct). While it still has the same fluid interface and amazing keyboard for such a compact device, it also has virtually none of the features it needs to work as a modern smartphone. And while we'd love to recommend the 9310 as an inspired, entry-level texting phone, Verizon isn't pricing it like one, with plans starting at a whopping $80 per month. All of this leaves the Curve 9310 in search of a customer.
Design and Keyboard
The BlackBerry Curve 9310 certainly looks a lot classier than cheaper texting phones. It measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, but with a pleasant, soft touch back panel, tapered edges, and a muted, matte gray plastic rim around the front panel.
The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD screen has no touch capability, and what is now considered the absolute minimum screen resolution on a contemporary smartphone. The Curve has had the same screen resolution over its entire five-year lifespan, with the exception of the 8900 series in early 2009, and the Curve 9370, which RIM released around the start of 2012 and is still current; both of those phones have 480-by-360-pixel LCDs. Regardless, you really need higher than 320-by-240 for browsing the Web and running apps.
I've always liked RIM's optical trackpad, which is more durable than the old trackballs and more flexible than the original thumb wheel. It's great for controlling the on-screen cursor and selecting icons. Four prominent function buttons bracket the trackpad, and are the best I've tried on a BlackBerry. A new dedicated BBM shortcut key on the side fires up BlackBerry Messenger instantly, where you can share photos, videos, and documents and conduct group meetings as well as regular back-and-forth conversations with one person.
RIM got the Curve's QWERTY keyboard right a long time ago, even though it occasionally fiddles with the key shape and spacing. This one is also stellar. The Curve 9310 is a small phone, just like it always was?Bolds are for bigger hands, Curves are for smaller hands. But I can positively fly on this keyboard, which has just the right key size, travel, and click response. I wish I could take it and glue it to some other phones.
Call Quality, OS, and Apps
The Curve 9310 is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. I had no problem connecting to our WPA2-encrypted network in the PCMag Labs. The Curve 9310 isn't a world phone like the Curve 9370, though. Voice quality is fine, with a clear tone in the earpiece, and crisp transmissions through the microphone. Reception is below average; I heard some choppiness in the signal that wasn't there in the same spot on an iPhone 4 on Verizon.
Calls sounded clear through an Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). Voice dialing only worked if I spoke very slowly and loudly; otherwise it wasn't accurate enough. The speakerphone went nice and loud, albeit with a touch of distortion at top volume. Battery life was solid at 8 hours and 16 minutes of talk time.
A speedy (for this application) 800MHz processor is on board, along with BlackBerry OS 7.1. That should have been BlackBerry 10, but RIM has delayed that OS so many times now, we're not sure if we'll ever see it. The Curve 9310 is fairly simple to navigate, with a clear layout, a sluggish stock Web browser, and enough basic apps to keep you busy. It's still great with push email. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube clients keep you somewhat connected to this decade. VZ Navigator offers voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, but it's pricey at $10 per month, and there are no free or one-time fee apps available like on Android and iOS smartphones.
BlackBerry App World contains roughly 40,000 apps now. But that's far below anything you can get on other smartphones, and most of the apps here aren't nearly as powerful as their iOS, Android, or even Windows Phone counterparts. And just as it was at launch time in April 2009, BlackBerry App World itself remains buggy, with some downloads and pages not completing properly and taking multiple tries. If you like apps, stay far away.
Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
BlackBerrys were good music players back when few other phones were, and that continues here. (Back then, DRM was still a problem, so not as many people used their phones as music players as they do now.) The microSD card slot works with cards up to 32GB; my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. You'll need one, because there's a paltry 91MB of free internal storage available. There's a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack up on top, Slacker delivers free, streaming music, and there's a new FM radio, in a nod to the seventies. Music tracks sounded fine over Plantronics BackBeat Go Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars). Standalone MP4, WMV, AVI, and Xvid videos up to 640-by-480-pixel resolution transcoded down and played fine, but DivX was out.
The 3.2-megapixel fixed focus camera has an LED flash, and now supports image stabilization, face detection, and geotagging?all welcome upgrades. Aside from that, this is still the same camera I've tested many times before on prior Curves, and it doesn't perform much differently here; it's also lower-end than the 5-megapixel sensor in the Curve 9370. You get decent shots in outdoor light and grainy photos indoors with inky black areas, though at least the flash is reasonably bright. Standard-definition, 640-by-480-pixel video recordings played smoothly at 30 frames per second, but lacked detail even outdoors in bright sunlight. There's no front-facing camera, so video chats are out.
RIM has delivered a nice, low-end Curve, but missed its optimal release date by about four years. The LG Lucid??($49.99, 4 stars) is an ideal substitution; it doesn't have a hardware keyboard, but it has dual-core performance, 4G LTE data speeds, 1080p video recording, video chats, a much higher resolution 4-inch touch screen, and access to hundreds of thousands of third party apps, all for the same exact price as the Curve 9310. Moving up in price, the oversized Samsung Galaxy S III ($199.99, 4.5 stars) is our current Editors' Choice, although it costs considerably more. If you really want a hardware keyboard, the Motorola Droid 4 ($199.99, 4.5 stars) is an excellent choice, although it's not quite as powerful as the Galaxy S III.
In case it needs to be said: All three of these phones are so far ahead of the Curve 9310, and even RIM's higher-end Bold 9900s, that it's actually a little sad.
