NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. is leading an international effort to develop and launch the High Resolution Coronal Imager, or Hi-C, on a sounding rocket from the White Sands Missile Range at White Sands, N.M. Hi-C is a next-generation suborbital space telescope designed to capture the highest-resolution images ever taken of the million-degree solar corona. Key partners include the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, University of Central Lancashire in Lancashire, England, and the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Understanding the sun's activity and its effects on Earth's environment is the critical scientific objective of Hi-C, which will provide unique, unprecedented views of the dynamic activity in the solar atmosphere.

The telescope is slated for launch in July 2012. It will fly aboard a Black Brant sounding rocket to be launched from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The mission will demonstrate the technology necessary to collect 150-kilometer-resolution images of the sun in the extreme ultraviolet spectrum. Using a resolution 5 times greater than any previous imager, Hi-C will observe the small-scale processes that exist everywhere in hot magnetized coronal plasma. Additionally, the mission is designed to study the mechanisms for growth, diffusion and reconnection of magnetic fields of the corona, and to help understand the coupling of small-scale dynamic and eruptive processes to large scale dynamics.

A major scientific impact of Hi-C will be to place significant new constraints on theories of coronal heating and structuring, by establishing whether or not there is additional fine structure below the current level of resolution.

"This instrument could push the limits on theories of coronal heating, answering questions such as why the temperature of the sun's corona is millions of degrees higher than that of the surface," said Marshall heliophysicist, Dr. Jonathan Cirtain, who is Principle Investigator, on the Hi-C mission.

"Hinode has shown that current instrumentation used for coronal structure studies has insufficient resolution to separate individual features along the line-of-sight," Cirtain said. "Hi-C will accomplish this measurement, with margin".

Brave | Arts & Entertainment | South Philly Review

Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) in Pixar?s ?Brave? shows girls that they can shoot a bow and arrow, too.

It may be clearer than ever that Pixar?s golden era went out with ?Toy Story 3,? the jewel in the crown of an animation studio that ruled over its medium for 15 glorious years. But does ?Brave,? Pixar?s new badass-Scottish-lass adventure, deserve to be flogged simply because it?s not ?WALL?E?-level transcendent? Yes and no. Solid yet innocuous, moving yet minimally ambitious, this old-fashioned fantasy is an oxymoronic specimen, aiming for progressiveness while clinging to safe traditions. But it nevertheless offers something rarely seen in the world of toons: A mother-daughter tale that leaves the boys on the side.

Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is your typical oppressed tomboy princess, a nervy athlete who?d rather fire arrows than follow the rules of her mother (voiced by Emma Thompson), a stern queen trying to marry Merida off. Before you can say ?Mulan,? our free-thinking heroine is pulling an Ariel, consulting a shady witch to ?change her fate.? What results is as zanily random as it is intentionally gender-subverting, and when not inducing yawns with lazy plot offshoots (the male characters simply holler and spar), the combo yields tender common ground for its feuding kinswomen.

Directed by Pixar?s Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, ?Brave? follows Disney?s ?Tangled? as a film in which hair proves a benchmark in animation?s evolution (Merida?s springy, scarlet locks are wondrous to behold). But, more importantly, the movie boasts Pixar?s first female lead, a separate benchmark many will view as a blown opportunity.

Andrews and Chapman may pilot their film to an affecting resolution, but their introductory scene of Merida triumphantly scaling a mountain (one of many moments with misty vistas), is hardly a promise that?s kept. ?Brave? is an atmospheric jaunt with quirky flourishes, but its bound to leave the gals in the audience feeling a bit shortchanged. Whereas, say, ?Up? presented a man with startling human complexity, Pixar?s unwittingly regressive 13th feature keeps things light and unchallenging, all while quietly waving a flag of feminism. Instead of passing women the ball, it merely throws them a bone.

The Hunter

Available Tuesday

Willem Dafoe fans shouldn?t miss the eco-drama ?The Hunter,? which sees the chameleonic actor take the lead as a sharp-shooting mercenary, tasked to hunt down an endangered animal in Tasmania. Shot on location, the film is predominantly picturesque, and it ably blends environmental themes with taut conflict. Its scattered missteps are overshadowed by Dafoe, who gives a soulful performance as the noirish antihero.

Etiquette For Visiting a Newborn Baby | Iron Bridge

Babies are bundles of joy and they bring in loads of happiness. As soon as friends and relatives of the new mom and dad receive the news of the arrival of the baby, they get excited and rush to the hospital. They want to know about the health of the mother and about the weight and height of the baby and how he/she looks. They want to watch the ?first smile? or ?first yawning? of the baby. They want to touch the baby, clutch her tiny fingers, cuddle her and hold her. They want to congratulate the mom and want to convey their best wishes ASAP. But the newborn baby is so delicate that she needs a safe environment. Moreover, the parents might be deprived of much-needed sleep. So, when it comes to visiting a newborn baby and her parents, you should first think about their needs.

Etiquette of Visiting Parents with Newborns

Most of the time, the mother and the newborn baby are in bed. The new mom and dad need some time to adjust to life with a newborn. They may not get time to make the house look neat and tidy. The visitors should think how the visit can be helpful for the stressed parents. Here are some useful tips.

Visit Only if You are Invited: Whether you are planning to visit the newborn in the hospital or at home, just make sure you?re invited. Plan the visit only if the parents have extended an invitation to meet their baby.

Hospital or Home?: Only close relatives (the immediate family) and very close friends may visit the baby in hospital. Others may visit the newborn about 8-10 days after birth. The mother needs rest and time to bond with her baby.

Call Beforehand: Let the parents know that you would love to meet the baby at their convenience. Call them and make sure that no one else is visiting then and it?s not the lunch or dinner-time. Don?t plan a visit after 7 pm.

Don?t Visit if You Have Cough and Cold: If you are sick, even if it?s common cold, you should not visit a newborn baby. Infants are likely to catch the infection immediately. As the immune system of a baby is not properly developed, it is necessary to protect her from germs and infections. If you have recently recovered from fever and cough, or if you feel that you are going to have fever, you should postpone the visit.

Don?t Take Toddlers with You: As toddlers attend a play-school or a day-care center, they come in contact with several children. It is a fact that they often carry germs. This increases the chances of baby catching the infection. For example, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is quite prevalent during winter, is easily transmitted by coughing and sneezing and by hand-to-hand contact. It leads to respiratory illnesses in young kids. So, leave them at home.

Plan a Short Visit: You should not stay with the newborn baby for more than half an hour (A 15-20 minute visit is just long enough to congratulate the parents and enjoy the company of the baby!). Remember, you are not the only visitor and it?s tiring for the mother (and the dad too) to chat with the visitors, as she has to take care of the baby, breastfeed her, look after the household chores, prepare food, maintain cleanliness, etc. But remember, however tired the mother might be, she would love to introduce you to the new baby. So, don?t avoid visiting a newborn, thinking that the new parents must be stressed and exhausted.

Wash Your Hands: Infants have a weak immune system and so, they are likely to catch an infection quickly. As you enter the hospital room or home, you should first wash your hands. Use a sanitizer before holding the baby. This reduces the chances of the baby being exposed to germs.

Avoid Using Strong Perfume: Use of a synthetic perfume may prove to be irritating for the newborn, so avoid using it. The skin of an infant is very sensitive. The bodily systems are weak and the baby may develop health problems when exposed to unnatural chemicals.

Bring Something to Eat: The new mom and dad are already drained and you should not expect to be fed. Instead, you should bring some healthy and homemade food for them. The new mom may not have asked for any help, but you know that she needs nutritious food and rest. You may bring salad, banana cupcakes, fruity yogurt, a tray of whole wheat pasta, lasagna or enchiladas, porridge (they can heat up later), dry fruits, fresh berries and fruits, cheese and crackers, etc. Food served in the hospital is not always tasty. So, if you are going to the hospital, you can take lunch/dinner for the new mom and dad. They will definitely be grateful for the thought and the help.

Think How You can Help: At home, you can offer help in several ways. You can look after the toddler/older kids, if any. You can take them out, feed them, entertain them. If you can handle the baby well, then you can look after the baby so that the mom can enjoy a sound sleep after a bath. You can load the dishwasher and the washing machine, clean the kitchen, fold baby blankets, covers, arrange her clothes in the closet, etc. Call the parents in advance and ask when they need help. Ask them whether they need any grocery, vegetables, fruits, diapers, etc. You can bring some paper plates, or disposable plates and glasses, or disposable wipes for the baby.

Don?t Comment on the Physical Appearance of The Mother and the Newborn: It?s not fair to comment on the looks of the baby (shape of her head, eyes, jaw, nose, hairy skin, etc.). However the baby looks, for the parents, she is always cute and perfect. Similarly, don?t comment on the physical appearance of the mother as well. It takes time to lose weight. She might not even get time to style her hair and shape her eyebrows.

Take a Suitable Gift: As mentioned above, there are so many useful things that you can buy for the newborn baby. You may have already given a shower present but it?s nice to get a gift if you are visiting a new baby. It doesn?t have to be an expensive one, the thought is more important.

No Unsolicited Advice: You might have raised your own children efficiently, but every baby is different. People tend to forget one of the most important etiquette for celebrating the arrival of a baby that they should keep their opinions to themselves. If the new parents ask a specific question, then you may provide the solution to the problem but avoid a long discussion. If they are confused, it is better to consult the doctor. What worked for you may not work best for them. The parents know when to feed the baby and whether the baby is tired and needs sleep. And, let them decide when to resume work. While being supportive you need to respect their decisions too.

Watch for the Signs: You might love to stay with the baby for half an hour, but if the baby starts crying, if the new mom and dad look really tired, if they start yawning, you should understand that they need privacy and rest. The new parents need to spend some time alone with their new bundle of joy. So, don?t stay too long.

These days, women are discharged from the hospital within two days of giving birth. They need sufficient rest and time to recover and to adjust with the new lifestyle. If you are thinking of visiting a newborn and her mom, see to it that you are not disturbing them and you are helping them in some way or the other. Visitors should think about the well-being of the mother and the baby. If the mother is happy, the baby would be happy and healthy too.

In the first two years following the death of a child, there is a 133% increase in the risk of the mother dying, a new study from the University of Notre Dame shows.

Titled "Maternal bereavement: the heightened mortality of mothers after the death of a child," the study is published in the current issue of Economics and Human Biology.

Researchers William Evans, a health and labor economist at Notre Dame, and Javier Espinosa of the Rochester Institute of Technology, studied 69,224 mothers aged 20 to 50 for nine years, tracking the mortality of children even after they had left the household. It is the first study of its kind using a large, nationally representative U.S. data source.

According to the study, this heightened mortality is concentrated within the first two years following the death of a child, regardless of the age of the child at the time of death. There also appeared to be no difference in results based on household income, mother's education, family size, the child's sex or the child's cause of death.

The sample was composed of women who are married (84%), white (87%) and non-Hispanic (91%). Slightly more than half the mothers were between the ages of 20 and 34. Approximately one half had a high school education, and one third had some college education or a college degree. Less than 20% had less than a high school education.

Though this study is the first to examine maternal mortality after the death of a child, earlier studies from Denmark in the area of parental bereavement found that parents who experienced the death of a child had a higher risk of first-time hospitalization for a psychiatric disorder than parents who did not lose a child; and mothers had a higher relative risk than fathers, the effect of which was most acute during the first year and significantly elevated for five years or more.

Gold and Silver Investing: Keeping it Simple with a side of Patience ...

Pinnacle Digest writes: New Pinnacle Professor, Jordan Roy-Byrne, recently spoke to one of his highly respected fund manager friends. His message was simple: My advice for the next three months is patience. My advice for the next three years is precious metals. Patience and keeping it simple are the key messages of his most recent article.

The HUI Index has come under pressure in recent days. Shares of top gold miners usually lead out the rebound in gold and silver equities. Roy-Byrne reminds us that if gold and silver don't confirm their bottoms shortly, the shares will not perform well and begin correcting strongly. The HUI Index traded at $422.18 at 12:36 EST today. Its 52 week low is 372.74 and 52 week high is 638.59.

Gold and silver have just recently broken through key technical levels and gold and silver equities have now essentially been in a bear market for 18 months. There is a chance the equities could break to new lows, but any breakdown will not be prolonged.

In an effort to keep it simple, Roy-Byrne reminds his investors that if the metals break new lows, one should begin buying after the breakdown. In regards to the shares, one should begin accumulation on a retest of the low. If the markets begin to trade sideways and firm up, one should wait for support to be confirmed and then accumulate. It is simple but it requires constant patience. Again, simple patience is preached. This is easier said than done, especially when the Venture loses 1% on a good day.

Should we be trying to fill a liter bottle?

    ?

??????????? The current educational trends are analogous to trying to pour five gallons of material into a liter bottle using a funnel. As you try obliviously a large portion of material spills out and is discarded or lost. I use a liter bottle as my analogy?s container, as a liter is recognized as the standard metric unit of volume, a universal standard. This symbolism appears to be what is happening in education, an attempt to find that liter bottle in terms of a student?s capabilities, a universal student standard.

??????????? In our many of our current public school settings, teachers have been stripped of their individuality and creativity, forced often through coercion to teach specifically to the standardized test and to be sure their students pass the test or face consequences. In an effort to meet federal No Child Left Behind, (NCLB) mandates, curriculum and lesson guidelines are in place in many school settings that are creating a more uniform and categorized package of material that students learn and retain and through this we are losing aspects of children?s identities and individuality as well as the teacher?s creativity, imagination and individuality. My concern is what is it that we are leaving behind in this rush and push for test results and standardization as we fill that student, that liter bottle.

As I began writing the idea of soul which is for me is a crucial aspect of our individuality is being stripped away from children literally through more and more organized and orchestrated emphasis on the test. Most people at first will attribute a religious connotation in when mentioning the idea of soul. I began to review ideas and research from various authors using the concept of soul as the heart of our individuality which provided a point of reference that felt good. I went looking back historically trying to find where the emphasis directed toward improving our scores in standardized tests began and it was during the period of the Cold War, when our attention was turned to beating the Russians that the federal government officially started taking a hand in legislating and pushing for standardized test scores.

The Vietnam War and the social awareness of the late nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies created a bump in the road for standardized testing and the legislated learning processes however briefly. For a short period of time individuality was the norm again. Unfortunately this backlash only lasted briefly, due in part to the shift in scientific technology?s promoting and pushing of standardized testing, the days of independence were short lived. Today?s students and parents may take up the gauntlet again. The activism of the late sixties and early seventies was short lived as pressure for standardization ensued and the effort to teach innovatively became obsolete in many schools. The takeover of education by government state and federal was fully under way and innovation, individuality and the progressivism of John Dewey, a major proponent of individuality in education was being pushed aside.

The individual?s experience and involvement was the key to Dewey?s thought and to the educational premises of progressivism. It was tying these experiences to education giving context to the content that Dewey promoted. Dewey was adamant about society and democratic interaction in his pursuits of education. Dewey foresaw the direction our industrial society was headed as legislated and packaged learning began stripping away individuality for the corporate good. The goal of society to prepare needed workers and consumers was at a cost and that was losing a part of them as they fall prey to the standardized demands.

Sadly there are alternatives; in a community strength is in the interactions, relationships and implications. Within a school this can be powerful tool. This could be applied in a learning setting borrowing from Foxfire Core Practice three.

    ?

?The work teachers and students do together enable learners to make connections between the classroom work, the surrounding communities, and the world beyond their communities.? Foxfire Core Practices, 2009

Real education is about learning through and of experience. It is learning by doing. It is an environment where each person has input and interaction. This is a democratic classroom and this was developed in the early 1900?s by Dewey and was there as legislation pushed for standardization and simplicity in measuring using tests. There is a paradox in this type of education versus the standardized regime that is being imposed through NCLB and other legislated efforts.

    ?

?As nobody can become aware of his individuality unless he is closely and responsibly related to his fellow beings, he is not withdrawing to an egoistic desert when he tries to find himself.? He can only discover himself when he is deeply and unconditionally related to some, and generally related to a great many, with whom he has a chance to compare, and from whom he is able to discriminate himself.? William Pinar

    ?

We as individuals require others in our existence for triangulation as bearings or focal points of who we are.? It takes the input of other people for community and democracy to truly work and to develop. I had a professor in 1969 at Eastern College in St. David?s Pennsylvania, Dr. Tony Campolo, a professor of sociology, who has made more of an impact on me in the years since as I read his books and contemplated his thoughts. Dr. Campolo points to a growing issue in our culture.

    ?

?While the would be spiritual oracles fail to understand about our ?advanced? capitalist social system is that the means have been devised to make spiritual realities somewhat unreal to us.? More accurately, ways have been found in our consumer-oriented society to reduce spiritual hungers to emotions that can be gratified by purchasing the things being sold to us through the mass media.? Dr. Tony Campolo

    ?

It is not just church related spiritual realities Dr. Campolo is talking about here.? It is the gist of who we are, that inner aspect I will later refer to as soul, getting to know where we are in the world and why. The development and implementation of standardize testing has driven society to using such words as human capital in our viewing of students. Human capital verses human needs I can see why a mother would pull a second grader out of school because of testing.

Education should be an interdisciplinary event. It should be all encompassing, a lived in, a total undertaking. It is not the linear understanding of a school room and class XYZ that many traditional teachers and administrators adhere too and legislators want.? It is in dealing with more than just us but involving the world and community.

    ?

?It is through a concern with problems as they relate to mankind at large that it may be possible to create the type of understanding that will enable man to use with wisdom, those tools which have made this century the most promising and the most perilous he has ever known.? Elliott Eisner

    ?

Looking at our world view and how we communicate that to others and even to ourselves is important. How we go about educating and teaching our children should be a major concern. What they take from a lesson and how they use it in their own lives can be significant if we will provide the capabilities and allow this to happen. Sadly through a concerted effort schools have been stripping away the children?s individuality for the sake of standardization.

??????????? For many years now I have embraced within myself a different sort of understanding of the world.? In Native American culture all is sacred, every leaf, twig, rock, animal and human being. The idea of spiritual can be simply walking out the door to a brilliant sunrise or full moon as it inspires and fulfills that within.? I see education and curriculum in a similar manner, one of sacredness of spiritual fulfillment, more so than a curriculum map on a wall next to the essential question of the day, for those in learning focused schools. It is not a static fixed commodity some legislators want for ease of operation and it can change with the group and community that it is operating within.

As I researched and read curriculum theorists, many are bringing back the sacredness of learning of understanding and perhaps returning a culture lost in the midst of being found.

    ?

?The Community of truth, the grace of things, the transcendent subject, the ?secret? that ?sits in the middle and knows? ? these images emerge, for me, from my experience of reality as sacred and of the sacred as real.? Others may arrive at similar understandings from different starting points.? But I believe that knowing, teaching, and learning are grounded in sacred soil and that renewing my vocation as a teacher requires cultivating a sense of the sacred.? Parker Palmer, 1998

    ?

?Perhaps it is in our end of course test and graduation test mentality we are setting limits and parameters on our educative process. We have become so normalized through standardization and traditional molds we have become limited in perceiving anything different. Throughout history it has taken holy men and women, sages, and esoteric? s to bring back pieces of what is truly there.? It may be that curriculum theory is doing this with education.? Bringing back what could be. Trying to keep from children their inner self their individuality is hindering learning and development as a human.

Education and curriculum are alive ongoing and pervasive.? It is not a limiting plan of strategies as so many teachers and school systems presume. Can we look at curriculum and education in such a broad manner encompassing everything about us, our lived experiences, and our curricula vita?? It becomes so difficult to be outside the box when everyone else is inside. But for learning to be real and to progress, we as educators have to ruminate and see the more ultimate issues in life. We need to go beyond the content, beyond the traditional rhetoric of compliance to standards, and we need to imagine and put back that idea of democracy and experience that living and life provides, suggested so long ago by Dewey.? There is so much more to education and curriculum for teachers to consider than what is written down on paper.

    ?

?Education must ensure that not only the material but the inward life of the individual be developed.? Education should address not the isolated intellect, as the advocates of standards suggest it ought, but the hopes and dreams of the self of which intellect ? the complex reflective self ? is merely a part.? Allan Block

    ?

It has been a few years since I was introduced to Robert Fried?s books. My first principal who by chance was a recent principal of the year in Georgia had a book club for teachers.

    ?

?Passionate teachers organize and focus their passionate interests by getting to the heart of their subject and sharing with their students some of what lays there ? the beauty and power that drew them to this field in the first place and that has deepened over time as they learned and experienced more.? They are not after a narrow or elitist perspective, but rather a depth of engagement that serves as a base for branching out to other interests and disciplines.? Robert Fried, The Passionate Teacher

    ?

It is about passion and bringing that to the class room and passing it on to the students so as Fried states ?it will serve as a base for branching out?.? There should not be a limiting to curriculum or to education as so often currently imposed. I recall from reading many years ago that Henry David Thoreau told his friends when he left teaching, he needed to be a learner first and then and only then could he be a good teacher.? We need to set the example and be learners and in doing so pave the way, lay the tracks for each of our students.

    ?

?From the beginning, learner choice, design, and revision infuses the work teachers and learners do together.? Foxfire Core Practice one, 2009

??????????? The late Syndicated columnist Sydney J. Harris wrote in the late 1970?s of how education was like a sausage stuffing machine and should be more like culturing a pearl. We are taking away the essence of who the child is; this essence is what is missing and what is being left behind. In an effort to leave no child behind, all are having bits and pieces of the individual human being left behind. I would like to be optimistic and say borrowing from the great civil rights leader that as teachers, real teachers, ?we shall overcome? and we shall put soul back into the bottle of our children. I got a bit carried away today but continue to keep all in harm?s way on your mind and in your hearts and always give thanks.

Carly Rae Jepsen Talks 'Amazing' Owl City Duet 'Good Time'

'It just worked out, and I love the song,' she tells MTV News about collaborating with Adam Young on the just-released track.

Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's thumping summer anthem "Good Time" might already be stuck in your head even though it only made its official debut days ago. When Jepsen first heard the song, she knew that she wanted to be part of that kind of magic.

"Actually [I found out about the track] through [my label head] Scooter Braun. He sort of played me the song in one of the first weeks I came down to L.A. to meet him," she recalled to MTV News on Tuesday at the splashy "Katy Perry: Part of Me" premiere in Los Angeles. "I heard it and I was just like, 'This is amazing. I would love to sing on this.' "

Lucky for the "Call Me Maybe" singer, Owl City himself, Adam Young, felt the same way. She added, "[Braun was] like, 'Great, 'cause Adam wants you too.' So it just worked out, and I really ... love the song."

Young shared a similar excitement about the track, which will not only appear on Jepsen's September debut but also on his release, The Midsummer Station, due in August.

"It was this whole worlds-collide thing, and it was this kind of dream come true. I can't believe it happened," he told MTV News last week. "[It was] so kind to lend her talent to this song, so yeah, it worked out. ... I feel like it's one of those songs, it kind of always needed to be a duet. That was the initial idea from step one."

As for his desire to write a party track, he added that now was as good a time as any. "I feel like every artist is inherently granted one shot to sing about having a good time in his or her life, and six months ago, I realized I hadn't cashed in my chips yet," Young said. "So I thought, 'I'm gonna sit down and I'm gonna give this a shot ... and get my friend Carly to sing on it.' ... The final product rarely exceeds your expectations, and this thing just kind of happened."

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again and that's exactly what Google has done with Google TV. With the second generation of Google's software hitting older hardware and some TVs, it only makes sense that Sony would revise its hardware and fill the void left when Logitech decided to leave the party. The $199 NSZ-GS7 from Sony might be the perfect little box for those hoping to internet-enable their TV without actually replacing the TV itself. How well it does at that is exactly what you'll find if you click through.

Google Nexus tablet details leak, expected down under in July

    Nexus Tablet

The folks at Gizmodo Australia have got their hands on what they're saying is training material for the soon-to-be-released (we hope) Nexus tablet. They're saying the tablet will be a 7-incher built by ASUS and be debuted at Google I/O this week just as expected. The specs are also pretty close to everyone's guess:

    • 7-inch 1280×800 IPS Display
    • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (not confirmed to be 5.0 just yet)
    • 1.3GHz Quad-Core Tegra 3 CPU
    • NVIDIA GPU
    • 1GB RAM
    • 8GB / 16GB Internal Storage
    • 1.2MP Front Camera
    • 8 Hours Battery Life
    • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
    • NFC

The materials suggest the tablet will go up for sale in Australia sometime in July, so we expect it in the very near future in other places on the globe.

That leaves a few things left to wonder -- will it come in white? And what's the reason to buy it over any of the other Android tablets out there. We're half kidding about the first bit (although it would look very nice in white), but for the second there is one thing we know of to make it worthwhile -- updates direct from Google, with no carrier or OEM bullshit involved. If you want an Android tablet, that's the one to get. If you need a reason to buy an Android tablet in the first place, we're hoping to see one this week at Google I/O.

iRobot Roomba 790 with Wireless Command Center hands-on (video)

What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a GDGT event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. In addition to deciding where it moves, you can also schedule daily cleanings or tap a "Clean" button to push the robot into action.Though this isn't the first time iRobot's dabbled in remote-controlled vacuum cleaners, all previous models relied on infrared sensors, meaning you could only control the Roomba if it was in your line of sight. This guy, though, uses a proprietary technology that allows you to program that 4pm scrubbing from up to 25 meters away.

As for battery life, it runs on four AA cells, and is rated for three to six months of runtime, depending on how compulsively you plan on cleaning. Interestingly, despite the change in wireless standards, the 790 is compatible with older 700-series Roombas, though it's not as is the controller would be sold separately. If you happen to be the kind of fabulously wealthy family who can afford (and has a need) for multiple Roomba cleaners, you can only pair the remote with one robot at a time anyway. Don't have the budget for a $700 robotic vacuum kit? We've got hands-on photos below and a demo video after the break.

How Much Special Education is a Good Thing?

Last week?s GAO report on special education in charter schools prompted the predictable dust-up between charter advocates and opponents. Opponents hailed the report as evidence that charter schools cheat the public system by failing to serve as many special needs students as regular public schools do. Advocates responded that the GAO unfairly compared charter schools with public school systems: no individual public school is supposed to serve every kind of special need.

The statistical back and forth obscures a much more fundamental issue with the GAO?s analysis. The GAO assumes that there is some fixed percentage of special needs students in the general population. If your school serves that percentage, it is doing a good thing. If it serves a lower percentage, the school is not doing its fair share?the report?s criticism of charter schools. Presumably, if a school?s percentage of special education is above average, it should receive some sort of blue ribbon.

This is a fundamentally erroneous way of judging how schools are serving students with special needs. Some special needs reflect relatively immutable student attributes?Down?s Syndrome, hearing or sight impairments, and physical fragility. Other needs are subject to professional diagnosis and varying standards of judgment?witness current revisions to the Autism spectrum. And many learning disabilities?the largest percentage of special needs?are subject to correction, prevention, and, again, professional judgment.

It is well established that public education systems over time have identified higher and higher percentages of students as requiring special education. The percentage has doubled over the last forty years. It is also well established that education systems in different states and districts identify widely different percentages of students as requiring special education. Over the years these differences have yielded criticisms of systems for both under-serving special needs students and over-identifying special needs students.

All such criticism presumes there is some fixed and objective percentage of special education students in the nation. There is not!

Good schools work hard to help all students adjust to the social requirements of schooling, explicitly teaching and practicing social norms?a struggle for some special needs students. Good schools work hard to instill in students the habits necessary for learning, for example, organization and patience?challenges, again, for some special needs students. Most important, good schools teach students the fundamentals of reading and math, breaking the skills down as finely as needed. Good schools provide extra tutoring in phonics, even employing highly specialized programs to reach students who struggle with standard curricula. If good schools are successful in all of these regards, especially in the early years of schooling, fewer of their students will display the learning deficits later in life that qualify students for special education.

To be clear, there are learning disabilities and students in possession of them that will require the intense and individual attention of a special education plan. But, some learning difficulties can be overcome through strong schooling. All things being equal, great schools will have fewer special education students than schools on average?not the same or more. Charter schools that have established themselves as strong performers do, in fact, take aggressive measures to prevent student failure early. High performing regular public schools do too.

I speak here with reference not only to the research. For fifteen years, as chief education officer of Edison Schools, I worked directly in scores of schools serving high risk students. The most successful of those schools ultimately sent fewer students to special education?because they intervened successfully early. Twenty years ago, one of my own children was diagnosed in elementary school as ADHD, and in second grade could not read. After attending one school that failed to provide intensive early intervention, he switched schools to one that did. It worked. His medical diagnosis never changed in the years thereafter, but his need for special education did?he completed middle and high school successfully without being classified and served.

Again, many students have needs that can only be served through interventions that are guaranteed through this nation?s formal special education programs. They deserve vigilant and expert attention. But serving them is not the same as serving all students who struggle to learn. The GAO does all good schools a disservice when it equates more special education students with ?doing a good job.?
