My weight loss to fitness journey - RunToTheFinish

A few weeks ago I posted a picture from the beach on Instagram noting that I was having a moment of ?holy cow I?ve changed? and the comments made me realize many folks don?t know much about my journey. New friends and readers just know I?m currently a crazy running fool who enjoys my healthy lifestyle.

Feeling brave enough to post the picture of David and I gave me reason to look back through some old pictures and remind myself as well just how far I?ve come on this journey. At some point in the last few years I went from thinking about weight loss to thinking about a body that could perform. The number on the scaled stopped moving, but the shape of my body is far different.? There never was an AH HA moment that turned everything around for me. It was more a lifetime of talking negatively about my body, feeling like my body didn?t portray the athlete I felt was inside me and knowing I wasn?t eating the right things. Weightlossprogress2

As a child, I was always involved in athletic activities. I tried everything: dance, soccer ,basketball, horseback riding, softball, volleyball, swim team?my parents are saints. I was the tallest on the basketball team, but too timid for defense and too slow for offense. I enjoyed soccer, but was best at goalie where I didn?t have to sprint.? I thought dance was fun, but I was always the chubby girl in the leotard on recital day. I found volleyball and swimming in high school and luckily I had some natural ability in both?but I never wanted to push too far outside of my comfort zone to become really good.

And yes I was chubby. Not the kid you pick on for being fat, but the one that adults always say ?she just hasn?t lost her baby fat?. Then I went to college and wondered why in the hell I still had baby fat at age 18.

What I really had was just plain fat. While I grew up eating solid meals of meat and potatoes at dinner time, my mom is the first to admit she hates to cook and LOVES packaged foods. Easy, fast, quick, cheap that?s the mantra for getting it on the table in a lot of American homes and ours was no different.? In truth being on sports teams in high school didn?t really help much either! The swim team practiced twice a day and we ate like it, but once we stopped swim season we still ate the same mega muffins and yes SODA was a key beverage in our home.Highschoolsummercamp

1999
I reached my highest weight of 165 my senior year of high school. I felt bad in my body. I was unhappy. I worked out at the YMCA, but really didn?t know what I was doing, just that I wasn?t going to go up from the size 12 jeans I?d finally had to cave and buy.

When I started losing weight it was all about the scale; that number dictated my life. Good day or bad. Happy or sad. Success or failure. It really saddens me now to think of all the days I wasted worrying about my weight. Again, my mom will be the first to admit she wasn?t the best role model for body image as she did and still does make statements about ?being fat? when she has in fact always been petite. This ?fat talk? went on in my head day and night, right up until I went to college.

2000
That?s right I did the whole weight loss project backwards by losing the Freshman 15 instead of gaining it. What I now know is even more important than my weight is I was carrying a lot of unhealthy fat from poor eating habits. Interestingly enough my routine nature is part of what helped me begin to lose weight in college.

I found certain foods that I enjoyed and simply went back to them over and over and over. I knew the calories and the portions and while I wasn?t yet eating for health by any means I was beginning to understand portions. I still enjoyed weekly pizza and ice cream or I might have lost it all in that first year, ha!

Throughout college I was consistently finding new ways to exercise. I walked A TON, did Tae Bo in our apartment, used the machines at the gym?though rarely the weights as I still thought that would make me bulky.? Finally my senior year, I caught the running bug and slowly that began to change the way I felt about my body on every level. I became proud of myself, I felt more confident, I wanted to tackle other healthy habits and oh yes?I wanted to run more!

2003
By the time I graduated from college, I had lost about 20lbs and just run my first race ever the Nashville Rock N Roll Half Marathon. I got my first solo apartment and this is where things really started to change. I began cooking vegetables, thinking about fruits as snacks and preparing meals. A few years later a friend introduced me to blogs and whole new world of learning about healthy choices was suddenly available to me!

Since then the progress has been consistent, as you?ve seen through my 30 Day Challenges and constant discovery of new foods. My thinking switched from what not to eat, to focusing on eating 7-9 servings of vegetables thanks to one challenge. Another helped me stop using the scale all together as I wrote love letters to my body and realized just how amazing it is to have run 6 marathons.

Slowly the weight continued to come off without me even focusing on it. Instead, I was focused on reaching new goals in running or other areas of fitness. I can?t begin to describe the difference emotionally and mentally it makes to be focused on positive goals, rather than negative.

2012
Last year I had the great fortune to finally find a doctor that was willing to take the time to work with me and find answers about my ongoing health issues. After discovering an allergy to eggs and dairy, I eliminated those foods and over the next few months, I watched my body shape change dramatically. I lost a few lbs, but looked incredibly different as the inflammation disappeared.?

I also began drinking a protein shake every morning to help overcome a parasite and with that my body began absorbing protein again so my muscle tone started to improve. These little changes have been huge and a fantastic reminder that the scale just doesn?t tell the whole story.

Maintenance
For the last 6 years I?ve been within the same 5lb range, which is a loss of about 35lbs and I reduced my waist size by about 7 inches. People often say that maintenance is harder than losing the weight. I?m glad to say that because I took my time with the process, I don?t feel this is the case. I?ve created a whole new lifestyle, not a diet or a regimen that I must follow. I simply enjoy being active and don?t think twice about reaching for fruits and veggies at each meal.

I don?t believe in Raw or Paleo or any of the other dietary types circulating right now. I do believe in learning about food and how it makes you feel and making choices that feel good?and enjoying a freaking cookie without guilt! If you are looking for specifics:

Height: 5?9?
Starting: 165? Current 130
Body Fat: 18%
Workouts: I post weekly logs, but I obviously run a lot because I love it. Avg 30 MPW, 2-3 days strength/core, 2-3 days cross training, lots of stretching and walking almost daily.
Goal: Am I in perfect shape, heck no. I hope a year from now to post another before and after with new progress on my fitness goals and seeing different changes in my body from that focus.

There you have it my journey?how I went from hyper focused on the scale to enjoying an active life that is fueled with tons of fruits and veggies! So when I talk here about loving to run or enjoying spaghetti squash, it?s sincere. I?m fascinated with finding new ways to be active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle because I think it?s fun to feel great and I know that it?s all about progress, not perfection!? Now it?s time for me to get to planning the Spring Bootie Buster Challenge as I love seeing other people enjoy the journey too!

Toward a Learning Paradigm College (Part 1) | Envisioning Online ...

Note: With this post and others to follow, I depart from observations about online trends, instructional technology, and even strategic planning, to focus on the essential issue of teaching and learning. We are in the midst of a ?paradigm shift? in teaching and learning at all levels of education, with significant implications as to how instruction will take place in future decades. These posts will focus on the anticipated changes and what they bode for the academy.

The Learning Paradigm College by John Tagg, ?is a rare book with the power to produce epiphanies of insight in most self-reflective readers. Over many years, I have enjoyed the role of both student and teacher, and yet I had an unsettled feeling that something in the process was fundamentally wrong, something that was both hidden, yet obvious. ?Now I understand why.

That unsettled feeling had much to do with teaching as had been done for many generations, namely what Tagg terms the ?instructional paradigm.? ?This pedagogy, practiced at all levels of the educational environment, places instruction at the center of the enterprise, with the assumption that learning will naturally follow. ?In other words, current educational systems will typically trumpet student learning as central to their missions, while in practice placing instruction as the organizing principle around which all activities are organized. In fact, there is a disconnect between what is being said versus what is being practiced.

Tagg passionately and clearly critiques the Instructional Paradigm, as reflected below.

The fundamental flaw of the Instructional Paradigm is precisely that it substitutes a means for an end. It raises formal organizational processes (courses, transcripts) to the level of institutional mission. In the Instructional Paradigm college, maintaining and expanding the paradigmatic process of delivering instruction is what makes a college a college, what defines it as an institution of higher education. . . . Teaching is valuable if and when it leads to learning, but not otherwise . . . It can be a useful tool. But it is?only a tool. When we make the production of tools the objective and ignore what the tools were meant to achieve we produce warped priorities and incoherent plans. To say that the mission of a college is?instruction is like saying the mission of General Motors is to produce assembly lines or the mission of a hospital is to fill its beds.

?. . . At the core of the Instructional Paradigm is a conception of teaching as the transmission of information from teachers to students. The paradigm thus emerges from a model of pedagogy that gives value to everything else in the institution [except learning]. (Tagg, pages 18 and 19, reference at end).

?So What?s Wrong with Current Instruction?

Tagg argues that the organizing structures of instruction are either antithetical to real learning or simply irrelevant artifacts that no longer have purpose. ?Among the examples of such practices he cites include:

  • The lecture as the primary means of transmitting information (contributes to student passivity)
  • 15 week semester (an arbitrary length of time for a course, inflexible to actual pace of student learning or their capacity)
  • 3 credit-hour course that insists all subjects can be covered in chunks of time that relate to ?seat-time? not actual learning time (artifact of 19th century model)
  • Curriculum is ?atomistic? in the sense that students proceed through an array of courses that may or may not relate to each other in any meaningful manner; ?a stack of instructional bricks that can be stacked in any order? (Tagg, p. 25)
  • Disciplines that, like guilds, have long ago lost their relevance and reason for being other than the fact that academia has been structured for generations into academic departments which ?derive their power from their role as depositories for classes.? (Tagg, p. 23). Inter-disciplinary models are needed for students to navigate the current world.
  • The transcript as a document that reflects the instructional passage of a student through a curriculum, but accomplishes little else in terms of what is learned.
  • The lack of accountability in terms of what students actually achieved in 4+ years of higher education.?The numbers that colleges report on are largely self-referential; enrollments and GPAs can be compared to equivalent figures from other colleges but not to any meaningful referents in the world outside the academy.? (Tagg, p. 29).

The Results

What results from the Instructional Paradigm are students often both passive learners and turned off to their learning, and possibly lifelong learning; students who know how to game the system to get the grade (an external motivator) by doing the minimal amount of work needed; students who see college as a means to an end, and who model surface learning with little connection to the outside world; and students whose skills in many areas are not being tested in a context that can demonstrate mastery. Is it any wonder that in a recent study, called ?Academically Adrift, 45% of students in an array of higher educational settings show no improvement in a range of skills over the first few years of college. This represents a colossal waste of resources and time that could be better spent on a Learning Paradigm that puts the learner first in both word and deed.

In Part 2 of this post, I will detail the Learning Paradigm and contrast it to our current model. ?In case you wish to read a shorter take on this book, please refer to an article listed in the References section from Change magazine.

New Orleans, LA Research led by Dr. Suresh Alahari, the Fred Brazda Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans and its Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, details exactly how the Her2 cancer gene promotes the progression and spread of breast cancer cells. The inactivation of a tumor suppression gene called Nischarin is among the mechanisms identified. The findings provide a new therapeutic target to block the function of Her2. The research was published in Cancer Research, OnlineFirst on January 21, 2013.

About 30% of breast cancers are positive for the Her2 oncogene. Although this gene is implicated in breast cancer, the exact mechanism has been unknown. In this study, the researchers showed that the Her2 oncogene activates two short microRNAs, called miR-27b and miR-23b, which in turn regulate breast cancer progression and lung metastasis. The study also shows, for the first time, that these microRNAs inactivate the function of a tumor suppressor gene called Nischarin, that Dr. Alahari's lab discovered.

Analysis to determine which of a number of cancer-related genes could be potential targets for miR-23b/27b found that only one other gene and Nischarin were directly targeted, and these microRNAs repressed its function. Nischarin is a novel protein that regulates breast cancer cell migration and movement. In a previous study, Dr. Alahari found that breast tumor growth and metastasis were reduced in the samples where they manipulated the overproduction of Nischarin.

"Our data for the first time show that these two microRNAs are highly expressed in breast cancer patients, and we were able suppress the expression of microRNAs using a novel antisense compound that led to inhibition of breast tumor growth in a mouse model," notes Dr. Alahari. "This study will be helpful in developing novel breast cancer therapeutic drugs that target mciroRNAs in breast cancer patients."

Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer among American women this year, and 2,240 among men in the US, with 39,620 deaths in women and 410 deaths in men.

Risk factors include aging, weight gain, combined hormone therapy, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. A family history increases risk, as does never having had children or having a first child after age 30. Mammography can often detect breast cancer at an early stage when treatment options are greatest and a cure is possible.

However, with a little sound advice and careful consideration you will be more inclined to choose the right item and make her year!

Sexy lingerie is probably one of the best and most appropriate gifts you can get your partner, especially during Christmas. This gift is more than a gift, in fact, by giving her such a Christmas gift, you are telling her no matter how long you two have spent together, you still love her and admire the appealing of her just as the first time you two met each other. You still think she is the most beautiful girl in your eyes. This gift is more than a gift, it is encouragement, too.

Don?t forget that Christmas lingerie is for women of all ages. Are you getting older, but still have a fun side that you like to show off? Just because you?re getting older, that doesn?t mean you have to dress like an old person. Some sites have you covered on fun and festive holiday & Christmas lingerie items for all ages. Christmas lingerie shopping is easier to do online. With the click of a mouse, you will save yourself hours of frustration trying to find parking at your local superstores.

Sexy lingerie can be classified by styles: sexy uniforms, garters, coveralls, sexy dresses, sexy underwear and so on. Sexy underwear with the artificial silk and two-way stretch elastic band is light, flexible, which can maintain female body and do no harm to the body. The soft and beautiful satin and crepe de chine fabric materials worn next to the skin to showcase sexy line, which has been the favorite for the Hollywood stars and the wealthy, upper-class ladies. It creates a slender shape of the underwear, slipping across the front hip and waist, separating breasts, so that the chest line becomes fashion key point.

Your man will enjoy seeing you in a gorgeous Santa lingerie outfit. Giving the gift of Christmas lingerie gives your partner the idea that all you want for Christmas is them, and that thought alone will help give you both a greater, more sensual holiday experience. Go ahead and take a quick break from baking those Christmas cookies, shopping and putting up your tree, and coax your man into the bedroom by modeling your new sexy Christmas lingerie for him and present yourself as his ultimate holiday gift!

Style is important when it comes to undergarments. The wearer will love the garments that will make her look more beautiful. Women love wearing comfortable garments too. You should strive to match a good combination of the style and comfort so that you will be able to purchase the best gift for your loved one. When shopping at the mall or in online garment stores consider the style that your wife loves. If she is the conservative type, select lingerie that will make her looks sexy while looking conservative as well. The color also plays an important part. The brightness or the darkness of the color determines the personality of the wearer. Always choose the color that is suitable to her character. You actually have no problem in style selection because there is a wide option available.

Even if the relationship is a new one, the effect will be just the same for both parties, to embrace the joy of physical beauty and love and in doing so to bring two people closer together. This is one of the things that make life worth living.

Some people may wonder that is the relationship is new, can still such a gift work? My answer is of course it does. To present her such a gift, just to embrace the joy of physical beauty and show your admiration of her, perhaps you would receive another surprise.

Buying a gift for a very special person is a challenging task. However, it takes only a loving heart to be able to do the things needed in coming up with a very special gift. The great thing is that lingerie and other undergarments come in a very wide selection which range from style, color, and size to price. Always see to it that you combined all four to be able to hand in the lingerie that she will surely treasure.

Debt, guns, immigration top Obama's agenda

Just 11 weeks removed from a sweeping re-election victory, President Barack Obama has hit the ground running with an ambitious second-term agenda that includes tackling the mounting national debt, immigration and gun control.

But the window in which the president has any hopes of meeting his aggressive goals has already begun to close.

Confronting the fading effectiveness of a second-term presidency, dogged opposition from Republicans in Congress and unexpected hurdles that will inevitably arise over the next four years, Obama must act with a sense of urgency on his plans, particularly amid the fiscal cliff negotiations.

?Second-term presidents generally get eight months or so ... where there's a honeymoon to push an agenda,? said James Thurber, the director of Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. ?He doesn't even have a month.?

Newly armed with ?Organizing for Action? ? the remnants of the president?s campaign structure, converted to a nonprofit for advocacy purposes ? Obama has suggested he will indeed act quickly on his top priorities.

But the next few months might well test the limits of the political capital that the president won in November, which saw Obama score a decisive victory over Republican opponent Mitt Romney and Democrats add seats in the House and the Senate.

If this past December?s lame duck Congress ? in which Obama won higher tax rates for the wealthy, but only after a bitter fight with Republicans ? offers any lessons, it?s that the GOP is equally committed to pursuing its own priorities, making compromise just as elusive as before.

The fiscal cliff fight will extend into this spring, when the government hits a series of major deadlines to keep the government funded and prevent a default on the national debt. That bare-knuckled fight could make or break Obama?s hopes of accomplishing much else on his agenda.

?I don't believe that he can wait until the last minute to deal with the debt ceiling and sequestration,? said Martin Frost, a former Democratic congressman from Texas. ?That's got to be worked out during February.?

That fight would threaten to consume much of the political oxygen in Washington in any normal year. And Obama?s ability to pivot toward his other major priorities, gun violence and immigration, may well hinge upon how quickly and cleanly he can dispense with this spring?s spending fight.

TODAY's Lester Holt reports from Washington D.C. on how the struggles and victories of President Obama's first term have set the stage for opportunities of the second.

History suggests that many presidents cannot hope to accomplish much in the last two years of their term, when the jockeying for the next presidential campaign begins. And with midterm elections looming in 2014, lawmakers will inevitably turn at some point from governing to politicking.

"There's kind of an arc of achievement in presidential administrations. Usually the first few months of a new administration is where most of the accomplishment takes place," said Ross Baker, a presidential historian at Rutgers University. "It's hard to imagine getting another piece of legislation of the magnitude of the Affordable Care Act in the second term."

And Obama?s hopes of significant reforms to immigration and gun laws might well depend upon how well (or how poorly) the spending fight with Congress proceeds.

The president last week laid out a series of measures intended to curb gun violence, most significantly proposals to limit the size of ammunition magazines, ban assault weapons and require universal background checks on firearm purchases. That plan won little praise from Republicans, and Obama might have to lean upon any reservoir of goodwill he has left after the spending fight to reach his goals.

Obama is practically obligated to attempt immigration reform after soothing the Latino community during last year?s election about his inability to follow through with a pledge to accomplish immigration reform in his first term. If re-elected, Obama told Hispanic voters, he would make immigration reform a priority in this second term.

Both proposals could engender significant Republican resistance, a phenomenon familiar to any observers of Obama?s first four years in office.

Another significant ? and unpredictable ? variable that could ruin even the best-laid plans involves the unknown crises that will inevitably arise during Obama?s second term.

The "Meet the Press" moderator looks ahead to Monday's inaugural address, predicting President Obama will discuss economic relief and how he'll tackle America's toughest issues in a divided political atmosphere that's still "toxic" for the White House.

A foreign policy crisis could always erupt and consume the president?s attention. Uprisings in Egypt, Libya and Syria, for instance, proved to major developments during Obama?s first four years in office.

If anything, the president?s first term offered a cautionary tale of how difficult it can be to navigate the obstacles to success that can arise.

The president nearly saw his signature health reform law go down to defeat after the advent of the Tea Party movement, for instance.

And external events ? a near-meltdown of the economy, mass shootings, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and other crises ? consumed as much of the president?s first term as anything else.

Just as foreign policy could prove to be a diversion from policy making, it?s one of the few policy areas where a lame-duck president can leave a legacy.

For instance, Bill Clinton, in the waning days of his presidency, concentrated on achieving an elusive peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

?He's got a whole range of things on his plate right now,? Frost said of Obama, ?it just really depends on how he prioritizes things.?
