Americans among hostages taken at Algerian oil field

(CNN) -

Islamists angry over Algeria's support for the French offensive in Mali attacked a gas field in southern Algeria, killing two people and seizing hostages, including Westerners, Algeria's interior minister said Wednesday.

The Westerners, accompanied by Algerian security forces, were en route to Ain Menas Airport when they were attacked early in the morning by another group of no more than 20 people, Diho Weld Qabliyeh told Algerian state television. The security forces returned fire, and the attackers withdrew to the base of the petroleum operation, some 3 kilometers away, he said.

Upon arrival at the base, he continued, the attackers "took in a number of Westerners and Algerians -- some people told us they were nine, some people told us 12."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Americans were among the hostages.

Accounts over the number differed.

An Algerian and a Westerner were killed in the attack, and two other Westerners, two of the security forces and two guards from the base were wounded, Qabliyeh said.

Algerian media reported that a British national was among the fatalities.

British Foreign Minister William Hague, speaking in Sydney, Australia, said the captives included "a number of British nationals."

Hague said the Foreign Office had sent a "rapid deployment team" to Algiers to beef up staffing at the embassy.

Algerian military forces were surrounding the building holding the hostage-takers and the hostages, Qabliyeh said.

Late Wednesday, the hostage-takers released the Algerians they had been holding but continued holding the Westerners, Algerian state television reported.

The group has issued demands, but they elicited no response, Qabliyeh said. "The authorities do not negotiate, no negotiations; we have received their demands, but we didn't respond to them," he added.

A Mauritanian news agency, Al Akhbar, said the attackers demanded in a news release an end to "brutal aggression on our people in Mali."

It cited "blatant intervention of the French crusader forces in Mali" and accused the world of having left Syria's people "groaning under the pressure of the butcher" President Bashar al-Assad.

The news release said they chose to carry out the operation in Algeria because the country's president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, had allowed French military forces to cross Algerian air space in attacking Mali.

A U.S. official was skeptical about that rationale. "The level of planning suggests that this was in train before the French overflights ever took place," the official said. That view was echoed by another U.S. official, who told CNN's Erin Burnett that, "as of now, the attack appeared organized," not put together quickly or opportunistic.

The official said it was likely that the attackers had cited Algeria's opening of its air space to French fighters as the reason for the attack to protect their operational methods and make the attack appear spontaneous.

The news release put the number of hostages at "more than 40," including seven Americans, two French, two British and a number of other Europeans.

An Islamist group claiming responsibility for the attack told the Mauritanian News Agency and Sahara Media that 41 "Westerners including seven Americans, (as well as) French, British and Japanese citizens have been taken hostage."

But the claim about U.S. hostages appears to be incorrect, with the real number being as few as three, two U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The Algerian Press Service, citing a source from the provincial administration of Illizi, reported that "a little more than 20 foreign nationals are held hostage."

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, in Europe meeting with NATO allies, called the hostage-taking "a terrorist attack."

Some nine or 10 Americans were working at the field, and U.S. officials were trying to determine who had been abducted, a State Department official told CNN.

The source said the abductors were demanding that members of their group being held prisoner be released and sent to northern Mali. The official was not clear about where the prisoners were.

"The first priority is to gain understanding of what is happening," a senior U.S. official with direct knowledge of the matter said. "We are working on ways to improve that now."

Britain and Australia to boost defence ties

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain and Australia will increase ties on defence issues including cyber security and equipment programmes such as the BAE Systems-built Type 26 frigate, the British defence ministry said on Friday.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond was expected to sign a defence treaty with Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith in the Australian city of Perth later on Friday, in which both countries will agree to explore collaborating on the Type 26.

Britain has slashed defence spending as part of efforts to reduce a big budget deficit, and hopes that collaborating with allies on equipment and other defence projects will help cut costs.

"In times of budget pressures for all nations, it makes sense to maximise economies of scale and work with our friends to get the best value for money on all sides," Hammond said in a statement.

Britain expects to order 13 Type 26 warships, a vessel it says will be the "backbone and workhorse" of its navy, for delivery in the early 2020s, but the final number of vessels will not be decided until around 2015.

KT?s Genie K-Pop app goes global, bringing the Korean wave to an Android device near you

PSY was undoubtedly the Internet star of 2012 ? after ?Gangnam Style? rose from nowhere to become YouTube?s most watched video ever ? and Korea?s KT Corp is aiming to seize on global interest in the Korean wave with a music app dedicated to the country?s pop industry.

The company ? which runs mobile operator KT ? has announced?the international launch?of Genie K-Pop, an Android app dedicated to K-Pop music, which is now live in 45 international markets. The service was initially launched in South Korea nine months ago and it has the backing of KMP Holdings, a music distributor that has partnerships with seven of Korea?s largest recording labels.

KT says the app is the first dedicated K-Pop app to become available to users outside of Korea.

genie KTs Genie K Pop app goes global, bringing the Korean wave to an Android device near you

The service allows users to buy music direct from the app and users are given a free one minute preview of songs, in a move aimed at helping them ?try before they buy?. Certain tracks ? those labelled with an ?F? ? can be played back for free.

Search and discovery is aided by a ranked chart list, in addition to popular ? ?hot? ? keyword searches.

Interestingly, KT says that it has raised royalty fees for artists to 70 percent in a move that it believes will ?set a new trend? in Korea?s music industry. As The Economist explains, the royalty payout for artists is ?miserly?. Though Korea?s music industry generated an estimated $407 million (430 billion won) in revenue in 2011, artists often make as little as $0.03 (30 won) per track ? and that figure is divided between the label, writers and artist.

Genie K-Pop makes use of a variable pricing mechanism ? through its ?Moving Price System? ???that means the cost of each download is defined by each song?s copyright holder. That could make pricing interesting and give artists a chance to promote themselves using heavy discounts for certain periods of time.

The Android app comes with all the usual features, like push notification, sharing to social networks, etc. A streaming service will launch for international markets soon, but there?s no word on an iOS version of the app.

The Genie K-Pop service has been likened to iTunes in Korea and, though it is not likely to see that kind of traction globally, it will be interesting to see how it is received worldwide.

PSY has given K-Pop a higher profile worldwide after his hit song became the first YouTube video to rack up 1 billion views. That exposure has boosted Genie K-Pop?s potential for success and the service has a far higher chance of gaining traction outside of Korea today than it did a year ago when PSY was unknown internationally.

The app is available in 45 countries, across 6 continents, which include: the US, India, Singapore, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Brazil and Australia. The full list can be found here.

If you?re a K-Pop lover in Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey and the UK will have a wait on your hands as the app is making its way to these additional 10 countries soon.

Producer prices fall as food costs tumble

30 min.

U.S. producer prices fell in December for the third straight month as food prices declined by the most in over 1 1/2 years, while a measure of underlying prices pointed to minimal inflation pressures in the economy.?

The Labor Department said on Tuesday its seasonally adjusted producer price index slipped 0.2 percent last month.?

Economists polled by Reuters had expected prices at farms, factories and refineries to drop 0.1 percent last month.?

Wholesale prices, excluding volatile food and energy costs, rose a modest 0.1 percent, in line with analysts' forecasts.?

The modest core reading suggests businesses are seeing little growth in price pressures, and reinforces the outlook that modest inflation will give the U.S. Federal Reserve space to continue with easy money policies aimed at propping up the economy.?

The decline in overall prices brought 12-month inflation to 1.3 percent, the lowest level since July.?

A drop in food costs drove most of the overall decline in December prices. Wholesale food prices fell 0.9 percent from November, the sharpest drop since May 2011.?

Local group takes on gun violence in wake of Newtown massacre

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Relatives and neighbors of children killed in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, one month ago launched an initiative on Monday to help curb gun violence in America.

"On Friday, December 14th, I put two children on the bus and only one came home. I pray that no mother, father, grandparent or caregiver of children ever have to go through this pain," said Nelba Marquez-Greene, whose six-year-old daughter Ana Marquez-Greene, a first grader with brown eyes and black curls, was killed in the shooting.

One month after the shootings that left 20 children and six adults dead, the group, called Sandy Hook Promise, vowed at a press conference to transform public outrage into action to "make our communities and our nation a safer, better place."

Named for Sandy Hook Elementary School where the shootings took place, the group pledged to hold debates on wide-ranging safety issues and come up with a plan of action. At least half a dozen pairs of parents of children slain in the attack appeared on stage with the organizers, some making their first public appearances since the shooting, all holding photographs of their son or daughter.

"There is no quick-fix single action but instead a multitude of interlinked actions that are needed," said Nicole Hockley, whose son Dylan, a blue-eyed, blond-haired six year old, was also killed.

The killings plunged the rural New England town of 27,000 into grief along with much of the country and prompted President Barack Obama to form a task force headed by Vice President Joe Biden to find ways to curb gun violence.

Biden is due to submit recommendations as early as Tuesday. He has said that he will recommend universal background checks for gun buyers and limits on the ammunition capacity of magazines. Gun rights groups said on Sunday that these restrictions would fail in Congress.

The Newtown group offered no specific solution or policy position, but co-founder Thomas Bittman said its aim is to drive a national conversation on three issues: gun ownership and regulation, mental health, and school and public safety.

"Some of us who came together to start Sandy Hook Promise are gun owners," Bittman said. "We hunt. We target shoot. We protect our homes. We're collectors. We teach our sons and daughters how to use guns safely.

"We're not afraid of a national conversation within our community and in Congress about responsibility and accountability," Bittman said.

The National Rifle Association, the biggest gun rights lobby group, has predicted that Obama's drive for new limits on firearms and ammunition sales will fail in Congress.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut who attended the event in the basement gymnasium of Newtown's former town hall, warned the NRA against being too confident of congressional inaction.

"I think what is possible politically today changed a month ago today," Murphy said, referring to the December 14 school attack. "It's the NRA's job to say that no gun control legislation can pass Congress, but they're wrong."

The elementary school, about 70 miles northeast of New York City, remains closed to everyone but police who are still investigating the attack. Its students, more than 400 children in kindergarten through fourth grade, are attending school in the neighboring town of Monroe.

Residents on Sunday began debating what to do with the school itself. At a town meeting attended by several hundred people, including Sandy Hook parents, it was clear there is no early consensus on whether the building should ever be used again as a school.

Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra, the town's top elected official, said it would be months before a decision on the facility's future is reached.

Authorities have not offered a motive for the attack. The gunman, Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before driving to the school and shot himself dead after the rampage.

Quick Daily Review #13: Bad News Baseball [Video Game]

Bad News Baseball is a game I?ve wanted to see released on the Wii?s Virtual Console since the VC was first announced way back prior to the Wii?s release. It still hasn?t been released on the Wii VC, and it isn?t likely to be released for the Wii VC or any?forthcoming?Wii U VC. So I had to purchase a Retro Duo NES/SNES Player, and a used copy of Bad News Baseball, in order to once again enjoy this gem of a baseball game. All in all, $65 was spent. So, how does the game I fondly remember playing stand the test of time? Let?s find out right now!

Quick Daily Review #13: Bad News Baseball [Video Game]
System: NES
Developer: Tecmo
Publisher: Tecmo
Released: 1990

In a way, this game was exactly as I remembered it. That is to say, it?s still a good and fun baseball game featuring little league players and rabbit umpires. Graphically, it?s exactly what you would expect 8-bit NES goodness to look like after 20 years. The game looks good for the time period we?re talking about, and still is good enough to be both playable and enjoyable? something that cannot be said for a few other NES games, but that?s for another time.

Then there?s the aspects of the game that I had forgotten. Your fielders are insanely slow, and when you move one, all of the move-able players also move in the same direction. This mass moving of players means you have to multi-task with your eyes and watch all of them, lest you have players ending up in the way of other players when you?re trying to throw the ball. Nothing makes you quite as mad as when the ball is hit to third, and your short stop gets in the way. You go to throw the ball to first to get the runner out, your short stop is standing there to catch the ball, so now you have to make him throw the ball to first. If you?re really unfortunate, your pitcher will be standing near the first basemen and right in the way, which means he?ll catch the ball and you?ll once again have to throw it to first with him. That?s four players involved in one routine hit to third and trying to get the runner out at first. Usually, you?ll be able to still get the runner out, that is unless it is one of the teams fast players, then you?ll just throw your controller down in frustration.

Thankfully, this doesn?t happen all the time or even a majority of the time. Nevertheless, it does happen far more than I would like for it to.

Batting is pretty damn simple, although it was the NES and thus you didn?t have but two buttons not including the D-pad? and only one of those buttons is used for batting. The thing about batting that I don?t particularly care for is bunting. In order to bunt, you have to perfectly time your swing and let off the button at just the right time, which is quite hard to do on a consistent basis and most especially in a clutch we?re your looking to advance a few runners at the expense of one.

Another thing I don?t care for us running the bases. You?re players will run automatically once the ball is hit, it?s up to you to make them turn around and run back in the case of a fly ball. Often, the CPU will make a bullshit catch and you?re runner is already on the bag, and once that happens, there is no going back. Also, it?s pretty easy to have multiple runners running at the same time, when you only mean to have one running. This can create a little jam that will royally screw you over if you don?t watch it.

With batting though, hitting home-runs are fun; not necessarily easy per say, but fun. You?ll get a cool little animation with your team celebrating, and if you get a good hit on the ball to send it out of the park, you?ll get an awesome little scene with the balling flying in space having completely left the Earth. Absurd? Yes, but it?s awesome and fits right in with the cartoonish aspects of the game.

If you still have a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) or a Retro Duo, this is definitely a game worth having in your collection. There are aspects of it that are highly flawed and will quite often make you mad by costing you a for sure out or giving up a run that should not have been given up. But the game is almost 20-year-old, so it does deserve some leeway in that regards. Flaws or not though, it?s still a super-fun game that can be played very quickly.

This is a good game we find easy to recommend, but it may not be for everyone and you may want to demo it before adding it to your collection. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll probably like this.
