After a week of intense anti-gun sentiment?following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the National Rifle Association on Friday blamed?video games and their virtual guns?for creating a culture of violence that breeds killers.
"There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people through vicious, violent video games with names like 'Bulletstorm,' 'Grand Theft Auto,' 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Splatterhouse,'" said?NRA?executive vice president Wayne LaPierre during a news conference that was interrupted by protesters. (See video above.)
While most of the games LaPierre listed are popular adult-themed games made by some of the biggest game companies in the world, the NRA chief?also called out a game called?"Kindergarten Killer" and asked why the media had ignored it.?
"How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it?," he asked the press gathered in front of him.
If you know the name of the game, it's easy to find in a Web search, but it's not something someone is likely to stumble across.?That's because the simple, amateur Flash-animation game ? about a janitor who goes on a shooting spree in a school full of heavily armed children ? was posted in online forums a decade ago and?has never been for sale. There is no indication that the Newtown?shooter, 20-year-old?Adam Lanza, knew of its existence. Though a?Finnish site did remove the game after a shooting there, it is still available for free through other Flash sites.
LaPierre's accusations?come after lawmakers?and pundits earlier in the week?suggested that video games had played a role in the Newtown shootings. Though some reports suggest Lanza?played video games ranging from the family-friendly "Mario Party" to the violent "Call of Duty," investigators have yet to make any such connection.
While a new Gallup poll suggests that 47 percent of?Americans do think reducing gun violence in movies, TV and video games would be "very effective" in preventing mass shooting at schools,?researchers?and adolescent?psychiatrists have?spoken out this week, insisting?that the link between digital violence and real world violence is tenuous at best.?
"There is no good evidence that video games or other media contributes, even in a small way, to mass homicides or any other violence among youth," wrote?Chris Ferguson???professor of psychology and criminal justice at Texas A&M University and author of several studies on the subject,?in Time Magazine.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the real-world bloodshed, some gamers have called on their fellow players to take the time to examine their fascination with digital guns and violence.

KAMPALA (Reuters) - The Ugandan shilling was unchanged against the dollar on Friday but traders said they expected it to weaken once more active trading resumed next year.
At 1238 GMT commercial banks in Kampala quoted the currency of east Africa's third-largest economy at 2,645/2,655, unchanged from Thursday's close.
"The market is pretty flat because (dollar) demand is not there but going into 2013 we anticipate some small depreciation for the shilling," said Shahzad Kamaluddin, trader at Crane Bank.
"Considering the negative factors like a growing current account deficit, aid cuts and the central bank's loose policy stance I reckon the shilling will weaken when business resumes."
The shilling has lost 6.4 percent against the dollar this year but it has been strengthening since late November, lifted by decreased demand for the hard currency ahead of the year-end festivities.
Traders say the central bank's cuts to its key lending rate will keep yields on Ugandan government securities low and possibly erode the interest of offshore investors - whose dollar flows partly support the shilling's exchange rate.
At the last auction on November 29, the yield on the benchmark 91-day Treasury bill was unchanged from the previous auction at 9.8 percent.
Bank of Uganda is due to sell 110 billion shillings' worth of Treasury bills of all maturities on December 27.
The bank cut its key lending rate by 50 basis points to 12 percent this month, extending its policy easing cycle aimed at resuscitating economic growth.
"Because of low demand, market sentiment favours limited shilling appreciation for the remaining trading sessions of this year beyond which it (shilling) will come under pressure," said a trader at a leading commercial bank.
The central bank says Uganda's projected growth rate of about 4.3 percent for the 2012/13 (July-June) fiscal year is below the country's potential growth rate of around 7 percent.

The health risks of the fungal meningitis outbreak of 2012 that began in mid-September are still not behind those people unfortunate enough to have received contaminated injections of methylprednisolone acetate manufactured and shipped by the New England Compounding Center to outpatient facilities in 19 states.
CDC's December 20 Health Alert Update
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health update yesterday, alerting physicians to the continued concern for the development of spinal or paraspinal infections in those who had received injections of MPA before the recall of the potentially contaminated drug on Sept. 26.
For the more than 13,000 people who received injections into their backs in one of the 19 states known to have received shipments of any one of three contaminated batches of MPA who have not yet been sickened by them, there is increased reason for concern about the possibility of infections below the skin at or near the spinal injection site.
According to NBCNews.com , researchers from three of the 19 affected states had magnetic resonance imaging tests performed on 128 of such people who now had new or worsening symptoms, such as injection site pain. The MRI testing revealed 52 percent of those tested had signs of an active infection, ranging from an abscess to infection of the bone.
What the Newest Health Alert Means to Affected People
The CDC's latest update repeats the recommendations provided to clinicians on Nov. 20, namely to use an assertive approach in obtaining an MRI with contrast testing for anyone known to have received the contaminated spinal injections and who have new or worsening symptoms.
In addition, the federal agency is recommending clinicians also consider an MRI with contrast testing for people who had received the contaminated spinal injections but have only a persistence of the same symptoms they've had all along, namely back pain. Due to the chronic pain experienced by these individuals, they may not notice any new, subtle symptoms.
Current Data on Fungal Meningitis Outbreak 2012
Although neither physician knew it at the time, the actions of Dr. April Pettit, a Tennessee physician, and Dr. Marion Kainer of the Tennessee Department of Health in the identification of fungus as a cause of a recently diagnosed case of meningitis and then linking the source of the infection to a contaminated injectable drug used in spinal injections, was the beginning of a public health nightmare .
As of Dec. 17, 620 individuals have suffered some sort of adverse condition secondary to having received either contaminated spinal injections or joint injections. Three hundred sixty-seven of those people have been diagnosed with fungal meningitis and 218 people have been diagnosed with infections of the spine or paraspinal area. The outbreak has claimed the lives of 39 people.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels warned on Friday they will target the international airport of the northern city of Aleppo after firing at an airliner preparing to take off, the first direct attack on civilian a flight in the 21-month-old revolt.
Thursday's attack was another sign of the growing confidence of rebels who are also fighting an offensive in the central province of Hama, pursuing a string of territorial gains to try to cut army supply lines and pressure the capital Damascus to the south.
A rebel commander who gave his name as Khaldoun told Reuters by Skype that snipers from the Intelligence Armed Struggle Battalion, part of the Islamist Jundallah brigade, had hit the wheels of Syrian Airways flight RB201 on Thursday.
"Those were warning shots," he said, adding that the plane had been unable to take off. "We wanted to send a message to the regime that all their planes - military and civilian - are within our reach."
There was no immediate mention of the incident on Syrian state media.
Rebels accuse the government of using civilian aircraft to transport weapons and Iranian fighters who they say are helping President Bashar al-Assad's forces. Insurgents have cut off many of the road links to Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.
Fighting around Damascus has made the road to the capital's international airport unsafe for traffic. Foreign airlines have stopped flying there. According to flight schedules, the Cairo-bound RB201 usually flies from Damascus rather than Aleppo.
"What happened with Damascus airport will happen to Aleppo, even if the price is higher," Khaldoun said.
Another rebel urged civilians not to use Aleppo airport or Syrian Air flights "as they will be targets from now on".
"SCUD-TYPE MISSILES" FIRED
The rebels have scored advances across the country, announcing on Friday they had taken over Rayhaneya town in rural Damascus and several other towns in Hama.
Western powers and some regional countries fear that the more the Syrian government is weakened the more dangerous its response may become.
In what he described as acts of "a desperate regime approaching collapse", NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Assad's forces had fired more Scud-type missiles. "I can confirm that we have detected the launch of Scud-type missiles. We strongly regret that act."
A NATO source said there had been multiple launches of Scud-type missiles inside Syria on Thursday morning.
A video posted on Youtube showed what appeared to be Syrian soldiers firing a long-range missile which opposition activists said was a Scud, launched last week. It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the video or dates and location.
Rasmussen said the Scud launches justified NATO's decision to dispatch Patriot anti-missile systems to NATO ally Turkey - a deployment criticized by Syria, Iran and Russia.
"The fact that such missiles are used in Syria emphasizes the need for effective defense protection of our ally Turkey," he told reporters at NATO headquarters.
"The recent launch of missiles has not hit Turkish territory but of course there is a potential threat and this is exactly the reason why NATO allies decided to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey," he said.
DRUZE-SUNNI TENSION
Syrian forces shelled the town of Moadamiah southwest of Damascus on Friday, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens who were taking refuge in a residential compound.
"They fired several rockets at the neighborhood where hundreds of people were hiding. The field hospitals are now unable to take in more wounded. The numbers are big," said Murad al-Shami from Damascus.
The revolt against Assad began with peaceful protests calling for greater freedoms but after a heavy security crackdown turned into a civil war largely pitting the Sunni majority against the Alawite sect to which Assad belongs.
Other minorities like Druze, Christians and Shi'ites fear for their freedoms with the growing influence of Sunni Islamist hardliners in the armed revolt.
Opposition activists and rebels said on Friday they were trying to defuse tension between Druze in Sweida province and Sunni fighters from neighboring Deraa province, cradle of revolt against Assad.
The reason behind the confrontation was not immediately clear, but an activist said it started when fighters attacked a government checkpoint in Sweida killing and kidnapping several people, several of them Druze. Residents in the area were angered and in return attacked and kidnapped rebels.
"They exchanged kidnappings and threats but everybody is working on sorting it out," a Druze activist said.
Sweida, home to Syria's Druze minority, is solidly under state control. Most Syrian Druze have stayed on the sidelines of the revolt.
"What happened in the past days breaks the heart and is unacceptable to any free man ... We are confident that we will get out of it," said Mouaz Alkhatib, leader of the newly formed opposition coalition.
"Clashes between neighbors and brothers mean one thing - weakening the revolution and empowering the regime," he said in a statement. "I call on all my people and loved ones to look for a brotherly solution and not to threaten (each other) or kidnap civilians and innocent people".

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? Industrial conglomerate General Electric plans to buy the aviation business of Italian manufacturer Avio for $4.3 billion to grow its jet propulsion business and strengthen its supply chain.
The Fairfield, Conn., company said Friday that it wants to build its supply chain as it ramps up engine production. The deal also gives GE a chance to offer Avio products outside the aviation industry, in power generation, oil and marine products.
GE will buy Avio S.p.A.'s aviation business from European private equity firm Cinven and the Italian aerospace group Finmeccanica.
Avio has supplied GE Aviation since 1984. The company, which is based in Turin, Italy, employs about 5,300 people. It makes aviation propulsion components and systems for civilian and military aircraft, including low-pressure turbine systems, accessory gearboxes, geared systems and combustors. Last year, its aviation business generated $2.4 billion in revenue, more than half of which was derived from components for GE and GE joint venture engines.
GE isn't buying Avio's space unit, which employs 800 people.

OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says the country's economy returned to growth in October, although at a sluggish pace.
The 0.1 per cent advance follows a flat reading in September and a 0.1 per cent contraction in August that had contributed to Canada's worst quarter of economic growth in over a year.
The October performance, which was in line with economist estimates, starts the fourth quarter off on a welcome positive note.
The agency says the major contributors during the month were wholesale trade, which rose 0.8 per cent from the previous month, and retail trade, which increased 0.3 per cent.
Oil and gas extraction increased by 0.4 per cent, and utilities advanced by 1.2 per cent.
But there was also continuing weakness in manufacturing, down 0.4 per cent; mining, also 0.4 per cent lower; construction, down 0.1 per cent; and real estate agents and brokers, which registered a 1.4 per cent decline.
Overall, the goods producing industries were flat in October, while the services sector gained 0.1 per cent.
From a year ago, the goods industries remained in negative territory, down 0.1 per cent, while services contributed 1.7 per cent to economic growth.

Ohio this year has 39,000 jobs linked to shale oil and gas production, a number that is projected to more than triple by the end of the decade, according to a new report.
Shale oil and gas accounts for $4.1 billion of the value of the goods and services produced in Ohio this year, a number that will rise to $18 billion in 2020 and $35 billion in 2035, said the national report by the research firm IHS Global Insight.
The IHS report is the most recent of several studies that make estimates on the moving target of shale development.
?The unconventional oil and gas revolution is having a bigger impact across the country, including in nonproducing states, than is generally recognized,? said Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of IHS, in a statement. ?What we found is that the economic and financial links reach out across all the states in our highly-interconnected national economy.?
The report was financed by business groups that support shale drilling, including the American Petroleum Institute and America?s Natural Gas Alliance.
Ohio has approved more than 500 permits to drill horizontal wells in the Marcellus and Utica shale formations, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. Oil and gas are extracted through a process called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
The state ranks ninth out of the top 10 for production related to shale oil and gas, a group led by Texas and Pennsylvania. As group, the top 10 will contribute 1.2 million jobs and $178 billion to their state economies this year.
For some perspective, the $4.1 billion worth of Ohio goods and services, is roughly 1 percent of the state?s total for 2011; this measure, called gross domestic product, is tracked by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
On the employment total, 39,000 jobs is a little more than half of 1 percent of the state?s current total work force. IHS says the shale jobs will hit 144,000 by 2020 and 267,000 by 2035.
The growth projections assume that oil and gas prices will be high enough to encourage further investment. Estimating the commodity prices and their effect on employment is one of the most difficult parts of making such a report, said Daniel Meges, an economist at Chmura Economics & Analytics in Cleveland.
?Ultimately employment depends on drilling,? he said. ?Nobody gets employed unless they are drilling wells. They are not going to drill too much if the price of gas is too low.?
Prices are low right now, but have been rising.
Meges? firm issued a report of its own, showing that Ohio has 25,000 jobs related to shale oil and gas as of 2011. Working on the report, he learned the difficulty in deciding which jobs are connected to oil and gas drilling. His estimate was on the conservative side, including employees and independent contractors directly involved with the industry.
?If you add in the lawyers that are running around southwestern Ohio right now and you throw in some engineering consulting, you could get some big numbers,? he said.
The IHS study found that the largest employers in Ohio?s industry are administrative and support services, scientific and technical services, and manufacturing.
The report also looks at how drilling will contribute to the economies of all 32 states where there is no drilling activity, including jobs in manufacturing and legal and financial services. ?

NEW YORK, Dec. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:
Global Markets for Diabetes Therapeutics and Diagnostics -- Focus on Europe
http://www.reportlinker.com/p01057717/Global-Markets-for-Diabetes-Therapeutics-and-Diagnostics----Focus-on-Europe.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Pathology
INTRODUCTIONSTUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVESThe aim of this report is to provide detailed market, technology, and industry analyses to help readers quantify and qualify the market for drugs used in the treatment of diabetes and for devices and instruments used in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes. Special emphasis is given to major forces contributing to the vigorous growth of the diabetes market. Important trends are identified and sales forecasts by product categories and major country markets are provided through 2017. These forecasts are based on epidemiological data and projections, as well as on information about R&D trends and differential market potential on a country-by-country basis. Health care policies, demographics, and the wider economic environment are also taken into account.
REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
It is widely recognized that the prevalence of the most common type of diabetes mellitus, Type 2, is now reaching epidemic proportions all over the world. Cases of Type 1 diabetes are also on the rise, although to a less spectacular degree. These trends are of great concern, not only to the individuals affected, but also to governments and providers of health care. Indeed, the economic consequences of diabetes are vast, involving not only the direct burden of managing the disease but also the common and often catastrophic complications such as cardiovascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, and blindness.
Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment of diabetes are essential, not optional, priorities for governments and health care agencies. The already large market for diabetes monitoring and treatment will certainly grow in line with increasing incidence and with improvements in diagnosis. Thus diabetes is of great commercial significance to the suppliers of drugs used in treatment and to the suppliers of devices needed for disease monitoring.
Among the information needs of companies in this field is an accurate and up-to-date assessment of the current extent of the diabetes epidemic, its likely evolution over the next five years, and the impact of drugs and technical developments now in the pipeline.
SCOPE OF REPORT
This report discusses the implications of the above-mentioned trends in the context of the current size and growth of the diabetes market, discussed both in global terms and in terms of the most important national markets. Companies in the relevant pharmaceutical and medical industries are discussed, with profiles of the leaders and an update on merger and acquisition (M&A) activity. Five-year global sales forecasts are provided for main drug and device categories, and breakdowns are provided for several national markets.
A comprehensive refresher course on diabetes is provided as an appendix.
MARKET ANALYSES AND FORECASTSThe dimensions of the surging diabetes epidemic can be witnessed in stark outline against previous smaller estimates only a few years back. Increased awareness of this "modern plague" has led naturally to improved and more frequent testing practices. This new awareness has also led to improved treatment compliance by patients. Added to these are the more expensive therapies and increased penetration of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) approaches, which all combine to build a public health menace of accelerating proportions. For the purpose of market analyses in this report, the global market is defined as 13 countries which together make up over 80% of the total diabetes universe. These countries are the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, China, India, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the U.K.
Market figures are based on revenues at the manufacturer level and are projected at 2012-dollar value without attempting to predict the effect of inflation/deflation. Therapeutic categories discussed include insulins and oral hypoglycemic agents, devices including blood glucose monitors and accessories, and software aids to self-management of diabetes by patients.
METHODOLOGYPrimary research for this report included interviews with leading individuals in relevant companies and medical associations; primary sources of published data include epidemiological and economic studies, company annual reports, SEC filings, and government publications. Secondary sources consisted of literature searches, industry journals, and other commercial publications. Data for market estimates and forecasts were pooled from a range of sources, critically assessed by BCC.INTENDED AUDIENCEThis report is designed to satisfy the information needs of a wide variety of individuals involved in the diabetes marketplace, including company senior management executives seeking to base their strategic decisions on the best available information with regard to market forces and trends. However, it is also aimed at managers and executives in marketing, research, planning, and sales departments who need readable, comprehensive, and up-to-date background information on the marketplace in which they are operating.INFORMATION SOURCESSources of information included marketing strategists, industry executives, government and professional agencies, and surveys of physicians. Company annual reports and SEC filings, journal articles, and data from health care institutions were also mined, as well as publications of relevant associations such as the International Diabetes Federation and the American and British Diabetic Associations.ANALYST CREDENTIALSPaul Evers has been involved in analyzing pharmaceutical and medical markets for 20 years. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The reaction to the Connecticut school shooting can be seen in gun stores and self-defense retailers across the nation: Anxious parents are fueling sales of armored backpacks for children while firearms enthusiasts are stocking up on assault rifles in anticipation of tighter gun control measures.
A spike in gun sales is common after a mass shooting, but the Connecticut tragedy has generated record sales in many states. Colorado set a single-day record for gun background check requests the day after the Connecticut mass shootings, and some online retailers are removing assault rifles from websites in part because of diminishing supplies.
Nevada saw more requests for background checks in the days after the shooting than any other weekend this year. Some gun shop owners are even holding back on sales, anticipating only more interest and value after President Barack Obama on Wednesday tasked his administration with creating concrete proposals to reduce gun violence.
Robert Akers, a Rapid City, S.D., gun seller specializing in assault-style rifles, said he has about 50 of the weapons in stock but he's not actively trying to sell them and has even turned off his phone.
"It's a madhouse," said Akers, owner of Rapid Fire Firearms. "Any time they have one of these shootings or an election, it gets that way. I don't even want to sell them right now because I won't be able to replace them for probably six months. ... The price is only going to go up higher."
At least three companies that make armored backpacks designed to shield children caught in a shootings also are reporting a large spike in sales and interest.
The body armor inserts fit into the back panel of a child's backpack, and they sell for about $150 to $300, depending on the company.
The armor is designed to stop bullets from handguns, not assault rifles like the one used by the Connecticut shooter. The manufacturers and some parents say that while they don't guarantee children won't be killed, they could still be used as shields.
"Just like a seatbelt increases your odds of surviving in a car crash, these increase your odds of surviving being shot," said Kerry Clark, president of Texas-based Backpackshield.com.
Ken Larson, 41, of Denver, Colo., already had an armored backpack for himself and convinced his wife to buy one for their 1-year-old after the Connecticut shooting on Friday, when a gunman stormed Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown and massacred 20 first-graders and six adults.
"It's a no brainer. My son's life is invaluable," Larson said. "If I can get him a backpack for $200 that makes him safer, I don't even have to think about that. Where is my credit card?"
Though Larson knows the backpack won't guarantee his son's safety when he starts school, he says it's a worthy precaution.
"Kids already carry backpacks. When there is a shooting, you run for your life," he said. "Having it right there and on when he runs for his life gives him more safety."
Elmar Uy, vice president of operations at Bullet Blocker, a Massachusetts-based company that has sold the backpack armor since 2007, says the company's sales have tripled since last week.
At Amendment II in Salt Lake City, sales of children's backpacks and armored inserts are up 300 percent.
"The incident last week highlights the need to protect our children," said co-owner Derek Williams. "We didn't get in this business to do this. But the fact that is that our armor can help children just as it can help soldiers."
Amendment II was founded about two years ago using a new lightweight nanotechnology to make body armor products for soldiers and law enforcement less cumbersome. They began making the backpack inserts about six months ago, and also sell child-sized bulletproof vests. While the backpack sales still represent a minor part of the business, they now sell two varieties online ? one featuring Disney princesses and the other a scene from the movie Avengers.
Clark, president of Backpackshield.com, began making youth backpacks after the mass shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007.
"I don't do it for the money, but to save the lives of kids," Clark said. "We've got to do something more than just hide in the corner of the classroom."
